Offroading in a 2wd..

I agree with brian. The "off roading" you are talking about is much different then what I had originally assumed (and much different then what we do in this neck of the woods).

FOr a desert Runner, 2wd will do fine... even preferred so you can go crazy with supension without worrying about boogering your CVs.

As long as you are clear that the off roading you are talking about is tearing @$$ across the desert on dirt roads and the like, 2wd high clearance will do fine. Any terrain that requires slow progress or terrain with low available traction, and you will quickly find yourself missing the low range gears and that front axle. I'll reiterate that its not whether you can make it through, but how much you will damage the trail along the way.
 
Well I was trying to stay within a reasonable budget for suspension which is why the complete OME kit for 800 sounded nice..but im a noob to this stuff so I could be wrong here. Heres the place Ill be playing around in. Ive had it there with stock suspension and didn't have any issues but I stayed on the trail and traveled slow. My buddy and I went out in his 2wd pathfinder and he came close to high siding (see pic)

Xterra* A 2wd 4Runner can do most things that you would want with some good tires. I don't even understand that 0wd comment above.

2wd Open= 1wd
2wd locked=2wd(since both wheels are locked together)
4wd Open= 2wd or 1wd front and rear
4wd Rlocked=3wd or 1wd front 2wd rear
4wd FRlocked=4wd since both wheels locked together per axle

0wd happens when parked in a bad neighborhood for to long with nice wheels.

COB- who is hating?

Leary-I drove a locked 2wd Chevy 1500 for a long time up to moderate trail difficulty. Since I was locked and had regeared for the tire size I did less damage then the open open 4wd's spinning their tires or even locked idiots that don't use/know throttle control. Now 2wd does sometimes mean using the throttle and potential for doing more damage no denying especially if he is Open and not locked. I can tell you it is more on the driver then the vehicle though in my opinion as I have seen built rigs tear more stuff up with poor judgement or throttle control then unequipped vehicles.
 
did the first part of eagle lake 2wd just to see what it feels like, and i was stressful having to hit the obstical twice as hard just to go over it, finally just said screw lt! shift to 4wd lock it down and did the rest of the trail stress free with a beer in one hand, just saying
 
Pikeman, you are correct that the driver has more to do with it then anything else. I had a 2wd Chevy in high school, open diff. When I took it off road I had to drive faster, and I had less control, with the root cause being lack of traction. The only thing that is better about 2wd in this regard is that drivers tend to exercise more prudent judgement, because they know they will get stuck easily. They don't try those mud holes or hard lines.

All respect for the trail tends to dissappear when someone gets stuck, and thats how the trails end up getting closed.

Having 4wd does not make anyone a competant driver, but all else being equal, the driver with the most traction can get through the trail with the least amount of damage.

Back on topic. The most important thing is low range. Unfortunately, most 2wd trucks don't have it. Unless you find yourself in deep sand or mud, a 2wd truck with low range will be almost as capable as a 4wd truck, and certainly more capable then a 4wd truck without low range.

That part of the statement confirms my statment about people using a lack of judgement and why you would not be welcome on a trail run with me. Drinking and driving is the same on the trail or on the highway.

Again confirming the lack of judgement. Need to pack accordingly to include food and water. Save the beer or alchohol for after the trail. Enough on that subject. I am not bashing you in particular as it could be an isolated case. Just saying drinking and driving on the trail or street is never good. In fact most of the roll-overs or flops I have seen and helped recover were by impaired drivers.

Main thing is you can do a lot more in 2wd than you would realize. 4wd will save you in some circumstances and will allow you to go more places with less damage to your vehicle and the trail most of the time. I still stick with a lack of judgement no matter the vehicle causes more damage.

I feel like a rant cuz I am bored.

I think that sometimes this board is just way too narrow minded.

This is a forum about Toyota 4Runners, not who has the biggest ****. A 2WD or not, it's a 4Runner.

For those of us who don't care to climb rocks and just occasionally hit the trail, a 2WD is more than fine. Like hell I'm going to drive some FWD piece of crap just because pavement is what my tires mainly see. I'll still run over your face, clear lots of obstacles, and outwheel lots of rigs.

It still holds as much cargo as a 4WD, still works exactly the same. While I may be converting in the near future, I've never been in NEED of it. 4WD is more of a necessity to me, because snow doesn't exist here and I'm not stupid enough to get myself stuck in or on stuff I know I can't clear.

F-it, if you like it, do what you want in it, wheel it, hit the freeway in it, or just straight up drive it. Screw what anyone else thinks. It's still tons of fun on and off road.

After all, not all of us climb boulders and delve deep in mud every day. Some of us just like our cars reliable, cool to drive, and most of all, PERSONALIZED. I hate to sound cocky, but I've personalized mine a lot for my own taste and f*ck if I give a damn if you don't like it.

So, let's talk 4Runners, 2WD or 4WD, we're all driving the same car. Don't like it? Go to YotaTech.

I have a 4wd 4runner. I used to have a Tacoma that I would wheel crap out of. Even though I really want sliders, it's really obnoxious watching others fumble around attempting to get in the passenger seat. The running boards are VERY functional. I'm leaving my gawd damn running boards on.

Cursing helps my ego too!:trophy:
