Offroading/rock crawling spots in Pa...

Just an FYI, as I am not sure how many east coast folks are aware of these locations. We are up to 3 privately managed "pay to play" wheeling spots in Pa now...

1. Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area (AOAA)- near Shamokin, Pa. Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area > Home
Just opened to the public this spring. VERY big, with MILES of trails for stock to crazy. Cool things along the way like old strip mines, an underground fire still burning, some old equipment around in places and crazy landscape views. I have only been here twice, and it was impressive. For any local old school wheelers, it reminded me of Paragon. I have heard that the maps are not that great yet, but they are working on it.

2. Rock Run Recreation- Patton, Pa
Rock Run Recreation :: version 2.0 ::
Have not been here yet, but have heard good things about it. it is out in western Pa.

3. Rausch Creek Off Road Park- near Pine Grove, Pa.
Rausch Creek Off-Road Park
RC has been around for many years. Many levels of trails, from stock to crazy. I have wheeled here for YEARS with my XJ, at all levels, and know this place very well. They have a rock crawling competition program, as well as a Rock Racing program for those who like the thrill of competing. I think I have seen that members here take trips to RC already. I hope I can get my T4r out the next time you all go and tag along.

I've been to Rausch Creek many times, and always have a great time there. Even with the 'rustic' camping.

Haven't been to the other two places, but Anthracite isn't that far from Rausch, and is on my 'must-do' list.

Hit me up if/when you decide to put together a ride. I'll do the same if/when my club has a run to Rausch.

Sounds good!! Yes, you definitely need to go check it out. Let me know if your group is going, and I'll do the same.

Anthracite isn't too far past RC. Approx. 30-40 mins further north on 81. The hard part about Anthracite is getting used to the scale of it. RC is relatively small in comparison. On the one ride I organized with my XJ club at Anthracite, just on one side of the park we drove 3 miles back into the place on dirt access roads just to reach some blue/black level trails. :shocked: That was before it was officially open, so we had a trail guide thank goodness!!! I don't think RC is 3 miles from end to end. They do have maps, which are apparently a "work in progress", so not a lot of detail yet. Very good for expedition-type wheeling trips though, as there are lots of cool overlooks and sites to find since it was all coal mining land.

One of the problems is there are no good campgrounds or hotels close. Its almost worth driving back down to Pine Grove to stay at the Hampton Inn or the other motel near RC.

I haven't been to Rausch.

I did rally at the rock a few years back. It's a bit confusing trail wise, and some are literally not worth it (due to shortness).

This year we hit Anthracite, which is still in the infancy stages. Lot of coal dust and some muck, but a lot of fun and they are really putting effort forth. I was there with my club, and the FJ Bruisers were meeting. They seemed to think it wasn't challenging enough, but we saw plenty of deep holes and other obstacles. We plan on making it yearly.

Our club (Off Camber Crawlers) is going to be at Rausch Creek during the weekend of October 11th. At this time I'm not sure if I'll be going or not (we are leaving for Germany to attend our son's wedding).

If the time allows - I'll be there, and will let you know.

Can't make it that weekend. My parents are coming in to visit our first child.

Where are you going in a Germany. That's my mother land.

Our son is stationed at Ramstein. We've been over to visit twice, and have had a great time on each trip.

I have family near Geissen. Love heading over there.

Are there any other trail events after the new year?

Sounds good, keep me posted. I am due for a trip to RC. I haven't given the T4r a shakedown run yet. I still have a few things I need to do before taking it to RC. I can hopefully get them done in the next few weeks.

I've hit a couple. Some of my club is heading up to NJ next weekend and then to NC in November. I can't make those, as I have a six week old to help with.

I'd love to do an expedition trip. My uncle has done some crazy trips with his yota in Europe. In fact it broke down in Montenegro. Here is his site:
