Oil change gone wrong

I had my oil changed at Firestone yesterday, and I'm guessing the lazy tech thought it would be easier to bend down my skid plate to remove the oil filter than actually remove it. I only noticed the damage after I reversed out of the drive this morning and my tire rubbed down the side of the bare metal. Needless to say I have to make another trip to Firestone, which I'm not to happy about. Thoughts? Oh and they left split oil all over the inside of the skid plate...............

I know that feeling.
I've been buying my own oil and taking it to the dealer. 15 bucks for labor, 5 for filter. Worth every cent. Oil changes are messy and they suck in the cold and when you have to do it in a parking space on the street.

I'd be angry.

Dude, you seem to be taking this rather lightly. I would be fit to be tied. Its chit like this, is one of the reasons I do my own stuff. People these days are so happy being unhappy and their lack of compassion for others is the reason we are seeing this kind of crap work. Nobody cares anymore for their fellow man. IMO to be a mechanic on a car, you must have the passion to want to be a mechanic. Oh and lets not forget a good mechanic always h as the safety of the customer in mind when effecting a repair. Good luck

I was underneath my truck a few weeks ago finishing up a drain/refill on the transmission when I saw some old man legs standing next to my truck. I heard the guy ask me if I was changing my oil. I recognized him as my neighbor that has always taken an interest in my truck since I'm always doing something to it. I explained what I was doing and he went on to say that it was against HOA rules and that it damages the pavement etc... I removed myself from under the truck and asked him if the HOA would cover the cost of having the dealer do it. He was somewhat dumbfounded and when he recovered he said no. I told him until they were willing to step up and cover the labor charges, I'd have to continue to do my own maintenance. He also couldn't explain how it damages the pavement.

This same thing happened to me at a Toyota dealer. No damage was done to my tire and I never went back about it. Needless to say I do my own work on my truck from now on unless the job is over my head.

Something just dawned on me. My filter is nearly up top and I take it off from up top. I use an old oil bottle to catch to residual oil from the drain port underneath. Why would they go the route they did? Do you have the v-8? And is the v-8 filter down under where the tech bent up your skid plate?

I might have done the same thing myself, but......... A professional shop has no business using amateur short cuts to save time, especially when they charge for labor.

I can absolutely agree with that.

If your pavement is actually asphalt like most areas, then other than the cosmetic staining you are actually restoring the asphalt as the city washes streets in a mixture of oil to restore them. So your HoA should be thanking you!

As for the lazy tech, that sucks. I would make sure they at least reimburse you for the cost of the tire and find someone who you can trust if you can't do the service by yourself.
