oil change

Hi Guys,

My truck is schedule for an oil change soon, this will be the first. should I bring it to the dealer or not? I have a coupon i think it's like $10 for oil change. Just want some suggestion first. I'm also planning to use Mobile 1 or Mobile High Performance for the upcoming oil changes (Do i need 6 quarts or 6.5?) any input will be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure its 6.5 if you replace the filter as well. Just to be sure check your owner's manual.

I did my own at 1200 miles. It was incredibly easy compared to where you have to reach on my 2nd gen 4runner to get to the filter. I was just surprised how much lower the skid plate is on the newer one to get to the drain plug.

If you do it yourself make sure you have a good filter wrench because they do have a large gorilla screwing the new filters onto the engine at the plant. It took me several tries to get the filter off.

Total time was less than 30 minutes (I usually give some time for the drain) and used 6.5 quarts.

If you can change the oil your self I feel your much better off. I had a bad experience at the dealership for a oil change one time myself. They overfilled it by at least a quart. Several people on this forum had bad experiences too. There are many skilled mechanics at a Toyota dealership. But when you bring your 4Runner in for a oil change none of them change the oil.

To make the service department more profitable, many dealers use unskilled labor for tire rotations and oil changes. They still charge you the high labor rate even for these unskilled employees.

These people don't usually pull the dipstick as a check, and when they do tire rotations they don't start the lug nut by hand but use the air tools to run it on thus occasionally stripping a lug bolt. Plus if you change the oil your self you can take your time and let the oil drain out, at the dealership they slap it back together fast, no love there. Of course these minimum wage employees have to over tighten the filter and drain plug, and only put the skid plate bolts on finger tight. Plus they will never clean the Zerk fittings before greasing, and they will not clean the oil fill cap before unscrewing it thus possibly getting dirt into your crankcase.

I guess I need to goto wal-mart and get 7 quarts of Mobile 1 High Performance and do it myself.

Id stick with the regular M1 personally. Are you planning on stretchign your OCI to over 5K? Like 10K+? Are you reffering to M1 Extended Protection? I dont really think there is a huge difference. M1 has been proven time and time again to work like a charm in our Toyota engines.

Yes I do mean Mobile 1 Extended Protection, got the name mixed up! I plan to change it in the range of 5-7k Since I dont' drive much I'm trying to have it done once a year. Is the regular M1 good for up to 6months (or 5k whatever come first) vs M1 EP (12months or 12k) ?
Just wonder how much oil you guys put in exactly 6.5 quarts or 7 quarts? on my 3.0L Camry engine I just put 5.0 quarts instead of 4.5 quarts.

I just did oil on my 05 v8 yesterday.....she took full 7 quarts.

6.5 quarts filled my crankcase right to the middle of the dipstick lines.

fill some oil on your filter as well, before installing it.
