oil change

Why is it that the majority of car companies tell their customers to change their oil around 3,000 miles when it seems Toyota tells their's to change it at 5,000 at the beginning. (I'm talking about the 5,000 -> 10,000 -> 20,000 -> etc appointments they have). Difference in the engines? Toyota engines seem to last forever so I would think they know what they are doing..

The problems I've seen and heard other M3 owners experience are lifter tapping after a track session or autox run and burning oil (as much as 1qt/1000 miles). I use 5w50 SynTec and it's been working really well for me. I used to change every 4000 miles so it was in between the factory oil service. About 3 yrs ago, I've been changing oil every 8-10k miles with a filter change at around 4-5k miles since the filter is in the engine bay and easy to change.
