The problems I've seen and heard other M3 owners experience are lifter tapping after a track session or autox run and burning oil (as much as 1qt/1000 miles). I use 5w50 SynTec and it's been working really well for me. I used to change every 4000 miles so it was in between the factory oil service. About 3 yrs ago, I've been changing oil every 8-10k miles with a filter change at around 4-5k miles since the filter is in the engine bay and easy to change.
