Oil control valve filters

Have you ever removed, cleaned or replaced the 1GR-FE's two oil control valve filters? I'm anticipating doing so on my 04 & 05 T4Rs and would welcome insights. It seems an important maintenance item.

they just slide in and out with a bolt. i believe their either a 12 or 14mm but once you loosen it, the filter slides out with it.

you can see the one by the power steering pump pretty easy, basically a bolt towards the top part of the engine, that goes into the engine, the drivers side one though i believe something restricts the view.

I've replaced mine and it was necessary, as the engine had been neglected and run for 20k oil change intervals and had some sludge. You'll want to get new crush washers for the cap bolts to ensure a good leak-free seal.

If you've kept up with oil changes and run decent oil, it's unlikely yours are crudded up.

I'd pull the easy one and check it, located passenger side behind the oil dipstick so it's an easy pull. If it's clean, no reason to pull the harder to access driver side filter. If it's got sludge...off you go.

Get a new crush washer and torque the cap bolt to spec as shown in the attached service manual pic.

I agree with the above. I pulled mine when I did my head gaskets at almost 300k miles. Mine were very clean. Check the passenger side condition and go from there.

I didn't realize this was a thing. My truck was sludged up when I got it from former owners neglect. I should check into these.

never found them on the original motor that blew, and when i got the new short block, you could clearly see them.

here you go, passenger side. when you take the bolt out the whole plastic filter comes out. its almost in exactly the same spot on the other side but i forgot exactly whats blocking access to it.

I found a rusty bolt head above the PS pump under the exhaust. Is this the filter bolt?

Looks easy enough but its not. Getting it back in was a pain in the butt. You have to install it blind and by feel. Dropped the plug twice down to the skid plate. But I confirmed the filter was clean as new. I use mobil1 so I expected that to be the case. Just turned 230k miles.
Hard to believe its 46 lbs/ft. I think that torque spec was for later engines with the banjo bolt. Just verified, That torque spec is correct.
