Oil dilemma

Has anyone used the Mobil 1 high mileage synthetic in their 4runner? My 01 is due for an oil change and it has 190,000 miles on the clock. I have used the Toyota certified oil from the dealer for almost 5 years now. The 4runner doesn't leak nor use/burn oil. I have been looking at the Mobil 1 only because of the reputation of Mobil 1 synthetic. I also only use the Toyota oil filter exclusively, not switching from that at all. What are your thoughts?

I use Mobil 1 synthetic extended performance 5W30 and have no complaints I change every 5000 miles and no leaks.
I buy it at Walmart under $27 for 5qt

This question is almost like who's political beliefs are the best, or which religion is better. You'll get a wide range of opinions.

Personally I go with Mobil 1 or Bosch oil filters, and I use the Mobil 1 "gold cap" synthetic stuff... the stuff that's supposed to be good for 10,000 or 15,000 miles or something. Only leak I had was when I realized I hadn't tightened down my oil filter tight enough. My fault completely lol.

I use rotella T6 5w40 with wix filters. VERY confident in the oil. Research it / try it and see what you think.

Yeah, I know that it is a matter of opinion and I hope I don't get flamed but with my baby coming up on 200,000 miles, I just want to do what's best to get all the miles I can out of her.ray2:

I always wonder what flavor the certified Toyota oil is . I do know it differs per region, maybe even location.

Regardless, pick up some 5w or 10w-30 in M1 HM and enjoy. Great oil. The Mobil Super High Mileage is excellent as well.

A lot of it is opinion, iron & steel religion and even some politics. But the facts / test results and what is in oil are easy to measure and quantify. I am not saying to not go with mobile 1 in any form. Just offering what I would use and do use.... have had outstanding success with, keeps your engine clean and has the right ingredients such as a high zinc content which keeps your engine spinning for a long, long time.

Another filter I like and would recommend would be pure one / however I usually just go wix.

If my engine was torn down and inspected, I'm sure it would not be all spiffy looking and clean like some of the engines I see here. That said, my trucks PO never used anything but the cheapest oil at the cheapest of oil change shops around. Basically, conventional oil got my truck to 369,949 miles and she runs freaking great too.

I'm not going to bother with synthetics for three reasons:

1) I can't afford to throw money on the synthetic train.

2) If it made it this far without synthetics...who am I to mess with it.

3) I don't need any new or worsening oil leaks since I need to replace leaky valve cover gaskets one of these days.

I do my own oil changes and I use Valvoline conventional oil. I now run the bigger OEM oil filter though; I also change the oil approximately every 4k.

Basically, it's not broke—so I'm not going to try fixing it.

The good 'ol 5VZ does not care what oil you put in it as long as it meets or exceeds factory specs.

Mine has been on regular Castrol for it's whole 270k (I know the prev. owner) and is still clean and in great shape.

Why?

Because it's been changed frequently and high quality filters were used.

That's all there is to it.

My mechanic has twisted my arm. Next oil change is going to be Rotella. Hate Wal-Mart but my mechanic said that's the cheapest in town.

He laughed at me for buying high mileage oil for it when I had him tear through the vehicle after I bought it.

I run the rotella T6 can't beat Walmart's prices for oil. 19 dollars a gallon. Heck I run the T6 in everything I own or am responsible for except the Grand Cherokee. And I think I'm going to switch that to the T6. Then I only need to stock 1 oil.

The benefit of synthetic oil is that it goes longer without a oil change. In the long run its cheaper. I put about 10 to 12k miles on her. So with synthetic I change the oil twice a year. I also buy mine at Costco when its on sale. IMO

Thanks for all the input to this point. This 4runner is the first Toyota product I have owned. I worked at Government Motors..er, General Motors for 22yrs and always tried to buy GM. This 4runner has been the best vehicle I have owned and I bought it from a dealer that took it it on trade from the 1st owner with 150,000 miles on it. It had all oil changes done at the dealer(per Toyota owners website)and looked great so I had to buy it. I always liked the 4runners from day one but you can imagine what would have happened if I had bought one and drove it to work at GM. Anyway, I love my 4runner and hope she lasts a long time because I enjoy driving it everywhere.
