Oil Filter Drain Gasket Failure

This little gasket failed and created quite a mess in my garage. Never had one break like this. Changed my oil on Friday and yesterday I had oil all over the skid plates and front differential. Luckily I had a spare in my tool box and all is good now. I used an OEM oil filter for the change.

Looking at the bottom right of the big section near the tear it looks like it may have been pinched. It’s possible it wasn’t settled in the groove when you installed the drain cap.

What did you torque the drain plug to? Spec is 10 ft-lbs.

Or it was a bad o-ring, but statistics say human error is significantly more likely… shit happens.

I have no idea on the torque. I just tightened it up snug and left it.

It looks to me like it was probably not seated properly, and the bit that's missing from the O-ring was pinched between the drain plug and housing, when the drain plug was tightened.

As previously mentioned.

even this aluminum drain cap wasn't installed, oil should not leak, as the valve inside filter housing, need to be open. something wrong here.

Easy to pinch those, have to work the drain cap back and forth a few times until it finds its home in the groove before torquing to 10ft
