Oil Filter question

I just purchased a couple of oil filters for my '04 V8 4runner. They gave me part number 90915-YZZB5. They claim it is the oil filter before 90915-YZZD3 replaced it. They also claim B5 is made in Japan and D3 is made in Thailand.

Can anyone confirm any of these claims? Also, can the B5 version be used on the '04 V8 Runner?

Update

I went back and changed out the 'B5' filters for the 90915-YZZD3 filters since I couldn't get confimation if they were ok to use on the Runner V8s.

Curious thing though. The open end of the D3 filters are sealed with plastic. Also, I notice a little bit of grease or lube on the inside just near the rubber gasket. Is this normal? Thanks!

dman - Now I'm wondering if I got the "right" filters. I ordered filters for the V6 and received the 90915-YZZD3 that I was told superceded 90915-20004 filter that is presently on my 4Runner. The filter has a plastic cover over the open end and the rubber gasket has some grease on it that I'm sure is there to facilitate installlation.

According to the parts guy at my dealer, he did say 90915-YZZD3 replaces 90915-20004. The bad thing is I hear that 90915-20004 is a superior filter. Oh well...

The plastic is done so nothing(dirt)etc. gets into the open end of the filter.

and the grease is so you do not have to put a little oil around the seal before installation.

I just picked up some filters from the dealer for my 04 V6 and they gave me 90915-YZZD1. Is this the correct filter?

I checked with the dealer I bought my filters from. I quote from the email he sent to me:

"The oil filter # 90915-yzzd3 is the new number for your 4runner. It fits both the V6 and V8. It is the same one that we use here."

end quote.

I hope this helps. Are you sure about that "1" at the end of your part number???

I'm positive about the '1'. I called the dealer and they told me that the '1' filter is the new replacement filter for the V6. I don't know what to believe......

Well a couple guys here said that they got the 90915-yzzd3 as a replacement for the 90915-20004 (original filter). Another said that their's ended with a "5". My feeling is that the last number probably signifies where it was made. What do ya think? Wouldn't it be simpler if they had the original filter available. :)

That is very cool First Toyz. Now we just need the "D3" done for comparison. That is the one I got from Partznet.

I hope you guys like these. When I told the parts guy that I was going to cut the filter open, he told me he would give me another if I brought the open one back. :bounce:

I might do the V6 filter next, and if I do I'll post those as well.

Also check this for pics of the inside of the 20004 filter:

Great pictures, thanks for posting them. The 20004 filter is a dead issue now, can't seem to get them anymore. Now we need to look at the "D3". I've been told that the "D3" fits both the V8 and V6. Does that agree with what you've been hearing?
Thanks again for the pics!

I completely agree. I just got off the phone with my local Lexus dealer. The -20004 is the V8 Lexus filter and it's replacement is the -yzzd3 at a list price of $11.85. The -yzzd1 is the Lexus V6 filter. Don't really understand still because the local Toyota dealer said that the -yzzd1 is the 'new' V6 and V8 filter. Who knows.....

That's pretty funny because you can buy the yzzd3 for about $5.00 a piece at most "discount" toyota parts dealers (list is $6.49). I guess for Lexus owners it confers a steeper price.
Anyway, that's another confirmation that the "yzzd3 replaces the "20004". The Lexus V6 is not the same as the 4Runner V6.

The Lexus V6 is the same V6 that comes in the Highlander. According to the dealer I called, the highlander uses the same -yzzd1 as the 4.0L 4Runner V6. Glad I don't own a Lexus anymore.

This still doesn't explain why Toyota lists the -yzzd1 for the V6 and V8 and Lexus lists the -yzzd1 for the V6 and the -yzzd3 for the same V8 that is in the 4Runner. I would think that the -yzzd1 will probably replace the -yzzd3 when stock is depleted.

It gets “curiouser” and “curiouser”. You got me!

I just went and checked my service papers for the oil filters I have been buying;):

When I changed the oil at 1000 miles their was a 20004 filter on it, then I put a YZZB5 on it and then again I put a YZZB5 on it when I change the oil and filter at 5k and 10k, then at 15k I did not even think about it but when changing the oil I noticed the filter was slightly larger, just a little and it was a YZZD3 and then when I changed the oil at 16k the filter was a YZZD3;):

2003-2004 4Runner V6 and V8 use the same oil filter made for US Toyota Part#90915-yzzd3 (made in Taiwan)

The 90915-20004 is made in Japan for Toyota of Japan and was install on 4g 4runner at the factory and is not available at dealer in the US.

If you stealer tell you a different part# they don't know what the hell they're talking about!
