Power Steering leak on 97 4runner [Pictures]

Hello,

The V6, 1997 4runner sr5 has been parked outside for 2 days with a slow, constant drip of what appears to be oil, coming from the front. I removed the skid plate & found what I beleive is the problem, a rusted up pipe with a fracture.

Anyways im sure ill end up replacing both pipes as they are rusted up pretty bad. I had no idea what the item # is or even what they are called. Can anyone give me some advice please?

**Update, turns out to be power steering. Will need to replace the hose, can anyone give me the part #?

Wow, thats some serious rust!! Looks like a brake line..maybe a fuel line.

Not a fuel line or it would be spraying, not leaking.

Looks more like the lines to transmission cooler section of your radiator. Oil looks a little reddish so probably transmission fluid.

The line is attached to the POWER STEERING reservoir, which is extremely low on liquid.

Wow, that is a lot of rust! You must be in an area where they salt the roads. Glad that they don't do that where I live!

I've called around, Napa, Carquest, Autozone even the dealer all want $800 for the pressure & return hose....

There has to be a cheaper alternative!!! Perhaps I'll remove the existing hose system & have one fabricated at a shop

He's a Land Cruiser guy but is very experienced with Toyota truck parts and has the best prices anywhere.

Thanks for the tip, I found a guy around my city that will do it. He has the tubes from the 3.0, and says they might be too small, or they may fit.
New mexico is several thousand km's too far ;P

$800 for both lines, THATS INSANITY!!! I just walked next door to NAPA and was quoted $138 for the pressure line. I think someone has a serious crack addiction, or perhaps there is a just a miss communication.

I walked into Napa this morning too, after calling them and being quoted $288 for the pressure hose only. As the guy is finishing up the order he tiled the screen to me & i immediately noticed it was for the 2.7L engine ... lol

Anyways Napa here in montreal doesnt seem to carry it.. which sucks.

While i wait for the parts to arrive, I began removing the power steering pressure & return hose.

THe part of the hoses that link with the power steering gearbox is hard to reach, how the hell do I get in there?

Purchased new power steering hose from 1sttoyotaparts.com for about $500 shipped, taxed & dutied at border.
Mechanic installed it in less then 2 hours. He also put an aftermarket catalytic conveter (mine was stolen last year).
Runs with a bit more pep & that god aweful smell from the exhaust is gone.

Overall the project set me back:
Power steering assbemly $500
catalytic converter $350
CAA Plus Membership $130
Mechanic's time $150
New car alarm $230

TOtal cost to get car up & running: $1360

Still gotta weld some steel to the cat, rust proof it for this winter etc..
But i love my 4 runner!
