I have a 1998 4wd with automatic tranny. So I never had a oil leak, I went up a pretty steep embankment in 4wd scrubbed a little but going slow. I got home and noticed a couple drips of oil underneath the transform case but looks like it came from the top, also saw oil by the front of the tranny. A couple days later no more drips. So my question is there an oil overflow that would cause this ?

Valve cover leaks will develop around the rear on the 3.4l and if you are climbing it can cause more to come out and it would leak down a different way so you can see it now. You most likely already had the leak, look around the valve covers and if they are black and dirty then it could be leaking. You may just need to tq the valve cover bolts down, but be careful as over tq can strip the bolt holes on the head. Never a good thing.
Are you sure its oil, not trans fluid? Trans will be a reddish color.
