its a 22re. when i start it, it has no oil pressure. it takes a little bit of time to build up. (depends on how cold it is, but way to long for normal) it seems to b like a on off thing to when it builds up and as soon as it does it is great and does great intell i turn it off and start it again after awhile. any ideas? think it might b a bad relief valve?

the first step i would do is to just replace the sensor its cheap easy and can give you a idea whats wrong, if the problem still happens with a new sensor then at least that is ruled out. if the problem still happens with the new sensor it may be a number of things, the oil pump pickup tube might be clogged (i have seen this with the little tin tops on big oil jugs)
the pump itself could be getting tired.
If the relief valve was bad the oil pressure drop from full to normal would be slow not the build pressure.

While you're in there, make sure that your timing chain guides are not broken. I would also replace the chain and guides while you're at it.
There's a kit on ebay that is highly recommended by 22RE owners that includes the oil pump, water pump, timing chain, steel guides, chain cover and gasket. I used this kit on my engine a few years back. Works very well and great quality parts.

works alot better with new oil pump and oil but is starting to do it again. started it twice today and it did not build for a min even with a couple little hits of gas. its just weird how there is zero pressure and i can even here a knock int the eng and as soon as the knock goes away the pressure builds and works great the whole time its running. any other thoughts? would hate to lose the eng to somthing like this. new bearings? a clog? air? anything, willing to try it all!

well i have used ATF to clean the internal of the engines for year, i run about 75% regular cheap oil and 25% ATF
i run the engine at idle for about 15 minutes and drain the engine and repeat. once i have run the ATF twice i refill with clean 100% oil.
ATF has detergent in it and will clean out the oil passages from gunk and junk, depending on how bad the old oil looks i put new oil filters on both times.
Its been used many times some people run 10% for the duration of there oil change to keep the engine clean.
im sure there are sticklers who will say this is all wrong and they would never do it but my family has been doing this for a long time and my grandfathers Nissan pickup ran for 687,000 and he ran the 10% every oil change.
If you dont feel comfortable with a lubrication fluid like ATF you could try a dry diesel kerosene engine cleaner that could burn out your seals.

R U using a Toyota oil filter? I had the same problem with my 92 v6, I changed the oil added high mileage oil and a quart of Lucas oil treatment and a Toyota filter. Toyota filters have a pressure relief valve unlike fram or napa. Toyota parts make a difference !!!

no im using a napa oil filter and full syn high mileage oil with a bottle of lucas full syn oil treatment. ill hit up the toyota dealership tomorrow. the atf is not a bad ideal. i have used atf in 2 stroke dirt bike oil and it cleans them out real good. ill give that a shot on my next oil change.
