Oil Pump Preference for 3.4

You all that rebuilt your engines which oil pump did you choose.

Asin, Melling, Sealed Power?

Asin comes without any gaskets or seals. RockAuto has one for 70 dollars. YotaShop has two different Asin pumps listed one matches RockAuto and a more expensive one that matches the part number at Napa

Knowing these engines run for 350K plus miles, why not just go OEM? We know they last forever and then some and they obviously lubricate the engine properly. Peace of mind is priceless.

Aisin is OEM if that helps you out. Look up the number from a Toyota parts dealership and cross reference it. Stick with OEM and it will last forever as long as you change your oil and keep it full! NOTHING beats Toyota OEM.

I'm probably going to get the Asin OPT-022 from RockAuto for 70. No seals come with though.

So, my oil light takes 2 to 3 sec to go off after a cold start. I do not like it and am thinking about replacing the oil pressure switch. Napa has them for 10 dollars.

The switch in it now was out of the engine that came with the 4Runner. That sat half apart for two or three years I really feel like putting a new switch in instead of taking the switch off the engine that was running until the sleeve rusted through.

I also need to find one of my two oil pressure test gauges. I should look at the oil pressure since I let my engine guy assemble the bottom end instead of my brother and I.

I will say that my Cummins takes 3-5 seconds to build oil pressure and when it does you can hear the engine load. It’s a 15 gallon per minute oil pump. When it pressurizes the system you hear it.

i went Aisin and replaced all sensors that i didnt want to dig back in for later as well, all OEM. I think i ended up back at the dealer for the oil pump seals which was dumb

I had to get the seal and o-ring also.

I’m still not happy wit the amount of time it takes for the oil light to go out after it sits.

A good one-second-one till the light goes out. It may flicker once during the count. Meanwhile I’m spinning 1500rpm.

My engine had 258,000 miles on it. It was rebuilt with new rod and mains. Nothing was out of speck so just new bearings and rings and the cylinders got honed to ruff them up.

I think overnight my main oil galley drips out. So I must fill the entire system. The oil lights goes out right away within a half hour of stopping it. I never hooked up a pressure gauge to see what my pressure actually is but I am thinking about a 10w30 to see if anything changes.

I’m also thinking about a preluber. I have a 3qt moroso sitting on a shelf. Or an electric pump preluber that attaches to the oildrain plug.

Mine is going out as soon as a start it. Basically let go of the start position and it's out. From cold start. So that's about 2 seconds. I guess that be considered off as soon as started.

you might want to install an oil pressure gauge short term. I hooked one up last engine swap and just let it rest between the battery and the fender. still hooked up via the hose.

this way you can check it after a drive or whatever for a while then remove it once your happy.

try cranking the starter and you will see the oil pressure comes up as soon as the engine turns. I think a pre-oiler might be way overkill. it's the only reason I'm suggesting this path.

Never use Fram oil filters. I have seen these starve the engine from oil before.

Does the engine sound starve for oil till the light is out?

I haven’t used Fram since the one mini mopar website posted taking apart oil filters in the mid to late 90’s.

I have a different oil filter for next time. Also, I do need to put a oil pressure gauge on it.

When I put the engine together I tried pre-lubing with the starter before first fire. Oil light never went out with the starter.

About the oil filter.

I have been using the Motorcraft FL400S for years on both my Saturn and both 97 4runners. The ex’s 97 Puppy Hauler the oil light goes out before the engine even starts. Same filter.

This fresh engine has 3 oil changes and the oil pressure light behaved exactly the same each time.

So to me it either takes longer to prime my oil pump for various reasons or my bearing clearances are big enough that it just takes longer to build oil pressure.

I had the option to buy a high volume oil pump and I am starting to regret it.

My 94 Cummins takes about 4 seconds to build oil pressure after a cold start. It’s doing just fine.

I'm going to assume we are talking 5vz engine here

I'm pretty sure if it's working correctly it should take no time whatsoever to build oil pressure. sure the oil viscosity changes with temp but that really should not matter.

the oil path from the pump->pressure port->oil filter->oil cooler->everywhere

and it goes without saying it but the oil does not necessarily go thru the oil filter and oil cooler, just some.

the oil however does move past the oil pressure sensor. if your seeing the oil pressure light on the dash it means zero. if your engine does this at idle your focked already.

you can pull the fuel pump plug off and crank the engine with the starter. it should generate oil pressure. if it's not then your rebuild engine is in trouble. the only way to know is to install a gauge and find out.

yes it's a tight spot, yes it kind of sucks because you need a 1/8" national pipe thread to 1/8" british standard pipe adapter. If it was me I would need to know what kind of oil pressure I'm getting at a given RPM.

take the mystery out of it by assuming you know whats happening with a gauge. your rebuild might be toast already.

Interesting. I haven't had to mess with a Toyota oil pump ever.

Does it sound like you dont have any oil pressure until that light comes on? Maybe your oil pressure sender unit is messed up

I would probably put a test gauge on to see how fast your pressure builds up. As my Tetanus 1 has the light off basically as soon as the engine fires. Its engine 260k never opened up.

I dont think it's your oil filters.

It’s the 5vz and once running my oil light never comes on. Two different sensors and both behave the same.

I do need to mount a pressure gauge to know. Like I said my Cummins has gone years not building oil pressure until around 4 seconds after a start and it’s doing fine and still runs 70psi of pressure with hot oil.

Ok once you get your pressure readings. If your pressure is low. Try a quart of locus heavy duty oil stabilizer to see if it brings your pressure back up to normal spec if needed.

I am curious the cause of this though. As you fixed this engine a while ago and its functioning perfectly fine except a delay on full oil pressure. Very interesting indeed.

You shouldn't need a high volume oil pump. You most likely have a bearing clearance issue or maybe a missing or leaking gasket at the oil pump or pick up tube. Probably isn't going to hurt anything as long as you're not hearing any knocking or ticking noises at start up.

Only thing I didn’t like about installing the oil pump was the Mickey Mouse oil pickup tube gasket (paper and not o-ring) and the very small torque value for the pickup tube bolts.
