Oil relocation kits

3rd gen oil filter location...really Toyota....

I have found various relocation kits on forums..Amsoil, Earls, Summit Racing..ect..ect

1. Have there been any favorites and any real losers? I love the Amsoil family...using for over 20+ years but expensive. Any recomendations??

2. How many have used steel lines vs rubber hose?? In a non factory location the new hose may be in a position to rub or melt???

Sending this Runner to son in college and don't want to get a call about a leaking oil system.

Yeah that filter location blows, especially if you have aftermarket skids on.

At anyrate... there are numerous people running the Amsoil kits on here. Search "Amsoil Remote Bypass" and all the threads should come up. That's on my list of things to do not only for the better filtration but for the ease of oil changing.
 
No offense, but I just turn my wheel out and reach in there with one of those cheap gloves that have all the black rubber spots on it, both to remove and to install, and have never had a problem, 5 oil changes now. Of course, I recommend checking for leaks the first few days afterwards, but this has been working for me just fine.

That doesn't remove the suck factor or the oil that gets all over the frame and hoses.
 
I used one of these kits on my daughters 2wd but I don't remember which one. I will say that is was and absolute pain in the ass to route the hoses so they wouldn't rub. I really liked the idea but there was very little room to work with under there.

+1 on "suck factor", here. I can work with it just fine in the stock location, but it's a total pita, and it makes a mess. I'd love to do one of these someday.
 
I had one (Transdapt) installed about 10 years ago and it was pretty good. I had it mounted vertically just below the battery. I removed it after installing the 3'' BL as it was easier to access it through the gap in the wheel well. I just throw a rag under the filter before I remove it and there's no mess.

All that work to end up using the orange can of death??
 
I'm interested in doing this too now. Did the first oil change after putting in the cs-144 alternator and there is no room. The batt lead off the alternator is right in the way.

lol you had this issue too? you think that is bad, try running tundra filters for the 4.7l.... yeah i had to reroute the battery lead to a horizontal mount, not vertical

Not to mention after a while the build up and it ends up on your skids. I have a full set of budbuilt skids and hate getting the oil on them because when you go offroad it attracts dirt. Then you have a big dirty/oily mess inside your skids.
 
I researched this a while ago, and ended up deciding not to do it. While there may be a better location, the oil system is something that I didn't want to mess with. The height of the filter and its location in the oil system probably wasn't a engineer being an *******, but a reason for proper oiling.

I came to the conclusion that, depending on where it was relocated, there may be a possibility of starving the engine of oil for a split second on startup.

Obviously people have had success. I know it's not impossible. The alternative just happens to be a dead engine. I'll take the 10 minutes to unbolt the skidplates and wipe up the mess.

How is that possible? The oil sits in the oil sump, the oil pump is down there too, the oil pump is always in oil, when you install a remote filter you typically add more oil (about a qt) to your crankcase to account for the increased system volume.

I'm not the guy that designed the engine, so I have no idea what's possible. What you said makes a lot of sense. All I'm saying is the oil system is the last thing I would mess with in a car that I want to be reliable. Just my opinion.
