Oil substance in intake/j-pipe

Probably your valve stem seals are just too old to seal well enough and the excessive blowby is getting into the crankcase. If you see any blue smoke on start up, I'd bet such. Do a dry and wet compression test.

To slow it down I'd first try using a high mileage oil such as Maxlife or Mobil Super that contains swell additives to soften the seals.

Add the catch can. The reason they aren't used from the factory is that they have to be dumped or drained after a given time. Most automobile owners would not take the time to do such. Some car makers such as BMW actually design to dump it back into the crankcase.

The real fix will be to replace the seals.

Whichever line is wet is the one you want the catch can on. If both, then run two.

No smoke on start up. I use whatever high mileage full synthetic is on sale, right now it's mobile 1 stuff. So people run these on both lines?

So I put a catch can on both lines. The line coming directly from PCV has accumlated a fair amount of oil, nothing on the back line though. I checked the j-pipe again last night and it has some more oil in it. I'm not sure if maybe it was residual oil still in the intake or what since the rear catch doesn't have anything in it. Might have to just keep an eye on it and see.

If i did have excessive blowby on the valve stem seals, that would end up pushing more oil through the PCV, right?

That is correct. I have the same problem with my seal on cyl 5 but just have been too busy to deal with it. You should replace them for all cylinders when it is done. My little catch can gets 3/4 full after 1500 miles.

It may just be residual oil but check it again down the road.

I have only seen it done with the cams out of the engine. And this was on a 4.5l v8 out of a Landcruiser. If you haven't ever taken off a timing belt, pass on doing the job yourself.

I've done the timing belt before, wasn't too bad of a job. I did it the same time I replaced the valve cover gaskets. I was just wondering what all was involved to try and decide if it's really worth it on a motor with 235000 on it...

So it's been a few 1000 miles since I put the catch cans in, and I checked the j-pipe this weekend and there wasn't any oil in it. Guess I'll put a few more 1000 on it and check again, but the catch cans appear to have made a difference.

How much oil is being caught after 500 miles? At least the intake is nice and clean now.

I wish I had the collective knowledge to replace the seals while the heads are on the motor but I do not. Just a general ballpark idea, which doesn't lead to be able to help others.

I can take a picture tomorrow of what it's collected thus far and figure out how many miles it's been.

Please post s mounting picture. I actually made a home made one using a water separator for my Saturn. But when researching it all I found the BMW and Volvo factory separators and though about making one of them fit.

The 96 always had oil in that tube. It had 265,000 on engine. The 97 I have now that tube is clean. But thinking about it anyway.

Venting that oil vapor to a hole in the frame rail with a breather filter would help keep the frame from rusting

Yeah I can take some when I get home from work. I had originally planned to do a short write up on how I did them after I had run them for a bit, but I got lazy and then realized I didn't know how to do a post where you have a picture, and then text, and then more pictures etc, it always just clumps all my pictures at the bottom.

I took a picture of the package of the one I used. Its just a husky moisture separator for an air compressor. You can't really see too well, but the one that I put against the fire wall for the vacuum line back there has not captured anything, which was very counter to what I had expected since there was a bunch of oil in the j-pipe. The PCV one has filled up pretty good. You can see the picture of the mounting location....I just zip tied it to the other hoses running through there. And then the picture showing how full it is. That is after 2132 miles.
