Oil suction device for oil change, v6 no workie

Just a heads up.

I have one of these oil suction/pump things to do oil changes. I love it. I just realized it doesn't work all that well for the v6. It only pulls out about 4.5qt. Subtracting the oil filter, .2qt, that still leaves 1.7qt somewhere in the engine. So assume .5qt for oil that will never come out of the engine, that still leaves 1.2qt, or so, left in the drain pan.
On the next oil change, i'll use the suction method, and then drain the pan to see how much i get.
Bummer that it doesn't work as well as in my other cars, but oh well, good to now know.

If others are seeing different results, please educate me. Maybe there is something i'm missing.

the v6 only holds 5.5 quarts. maybe the runner is using .8 quarts per oil change. they say its normal for a car to use about a quart per oil change, i think.

Thanks for the reply. Now i wonder what the engine really holds. I read thru the FAQ for the 03 v6 and it says 6.4qt. I wonder if the FAQ is wrong.

Per my older records, i had pulled out 5.0qt on the first change, put in 5.8qt, and it was way overfilled. pulled out .5qt, and left it at the full mark.

Guess i need to do the suck/drain investigation to find out for sure. Things like these don't sit well with me.

I seem to get by with 5 quarts per oil change on the v-6. So I think you're doing better than you think with the suction evacuation method.

As mentioned in many threads, installation of a valve in place of the oil plug makes the change so easy. Reach under and with a quarter turn of a lever you're in business. I look forward to changing the oil because its so easy.

Let the forum know how much you find left in the pan with your next oil change effort.

the v8 holds 6.5, but the v6 holds 5.5.. i'm not sure if the faq is wrong, but you may have confused the v8 and the v6 for which holds what amount of oil.. or there could be a typo in the faq..

fwiw, it is called a fumoto valve and you need part number f-103 or f-103n which includes a nipple for attaching a hose on.

I have the f103n and it works like a champ. I attach a short length of hose on windy days but normally i dont need to. changing the oil when the oil is hot is not a problem at all. no mess and i can literally have it all done in 7-8 minutes.

yep, the 103n is the ticket

I ditched the oval access plate and leave a 3" length of NBR material tube so it sticks down a inch or so below the skid plate.

No confusion here.
Can't speak for whether the FAQ is wrong. I'll check the manual when i have a chance.

Looked at my manual and for my 2006 V6 it is 5.4qts with filter, 5.2 without.

Just got a similar item from Fram (Sure Drain; #SD-3; M12x1.25 thread.) The hose is part of the screw on valve release. Should work like a charm.

Thank you for looking that up. I tried and couldn't find my manual. :-(

5.4qts should be a lot better.

I ditched my oil extractor for the f103n. I'll never look back.

I need an eaiser way to get the V8's oil filter. I may trim the side of the skid plate so I can access the filter from the wheel well.

The oil extractor is very nice for vehicles with low ground clearance. It made chaning the oil on my Acura a breeze. No ramps or jackstands.

I bought one of those when they first came out a few years ago.

I used it once, then promptly threw it away and put the oem drain plug back in. It did work as advertised, but it drained so slow that you litterally have to hook it up and go back inside and watch TV.

I think it took 15 minutes to drain the oil out, no exaggeration. The hole is just too small in the middle where the oil comes out, and it has 2 springs in the way of it.

Your results might be better than mine though, let us know.

As for those petcock drain plugs, for some reason I just don't trust them. The chance of it vibrating open, or getting hit with a rock and opening is so very slight, but there is a chance. Engines are very expensive. I can handle using a wrench.

the draincock valves like the fumoto are two-step opening. They have a detent you must lift the operating handle out of first and turn about 45 degrees before they even start to open.

I understand your concerns but with these it is unwarranted. I don't know about other brands.

As for speed... draining while the oil is warm makes a world of difference.

I've only used it once but I'm getting good results from an extractor (Pela 6000) on my V6. Using the drain plug or the extractor I get just over 5 quarts from the oil pan, but the extractor is easier (though not faster).

There are bigger Pela models, and I don't know if the 6 qt. (actually 6 liter) capacity of the 6000 would be enough for the V8. Also, I need to put the extractor on an upturned 5 gal. bucket to give the hose enough reach. But I like it so far, for a variety of reasons. With the extractor and the top-mount oil filter of the V6, changes are pretty much mess-free.

Agree with this 100 percent , warm up the car first to get the oil hotish and I use the pela 6000 , I took the drain pan bolt out once to see about 10 drops , mind you I do pump it up a number of times to try to suck out every last drop
