Oil Type....opening a can of worms....

So as the title suggest, I am certain this is going to open a large can of worms, but here goes nothing....

I was recently reading this All About Motor Oil about the type of oil to use in my motorcycle. And from what I read from it, my question is this...

Is there any reason not to use some Rotella in the 4runner? From the sounds of it, it is a superior oil that is meant to last.

Let the can of worms be opened.....

Yeehaw, first reply in what could be a 20 pager (at least it is on powerstroke forums). Rotella T6 is good stuff, love it. But, I haven't tried it in the 4runner yet.

The 4R is due, so I think I'll go for the 5w40 T6, full synthetic.

BITOG is the site for all things oil.

I have thought about running some Rotella in my old chevy to help clean it out. Most of what I read says to just up the OCI. Interested in comments here.

5w-40 rotella ? Isn't that for diesal engines ?

However I have a buddy with a sti that's worked on and he runs rotella in his sti. My friend with a supra said he will be doing the same after he finishes his single turbo swap. More info on this please !

If you read the hyperlink it presents a pretty good argument to use it. It is used in a lot of motorcycles because of the wet clutch and I have a friend with an STI, he was told by the performance shop he takes it too that RotellaT is the best stuff for him to run.

That being said, curious what yalls opinions are on it...

Yes, it's a "diesel" engine oil, but its API-SM rated so it's fine in anything with pistons pretty much. It's just a good oil that can be had at great prices. My 7.3 loves it, my old kawasaki loved it, and soon, the 4Runner will too haha
 
So long story short, 5w-40 fully synthetic rotella is safe to use in our engines ?.... I have heard that rotella is the best.
 
I use it on all engines in the stable, 3 toyos (runner, prius, camry), 1 porsche, 1 bmw, 2 polaris atvs, 1 honda mower, 1 sears riding mower and other smaller engines for several years now, All Good. :cowboy:
 
I'm using Rotella T6 right now. Honestly, I notice no difference from Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 which I can get cheaper per quart than Rotella. I think you can guess what I'm using on my next oil change.

I'm also using the Rotella T6 in a turbocharged Volvo where I previously used Mobil 1 5W30. THAT I notice a difference in and I plan to keep using it in that engine.
 
Anymore people that use rotella diesal oil in their 4runner ? If so ... For how long have you been using and your experience so far.
 
So much discussion can be found about all this, but here is my uninformed opinion based on nothing but by own trucks maintence history...or lack thereof.

The maintenance records on my truck are far and few, but I have come across enough oil change reciepts to get a decent idea of how it was treated for 350,000 miles.

Original engine with 351,000 miles on it when I took possession.

Oil changes were done very infrequently often hitting 10,000 miles between changes and possibly even more. The oil type and viscosity were whatever was cheapest at the fly-by-nite oil change places the PO always went to.

The cheaper the better apparently. So I'm sure it got a good mix of low end oil brands with the corresponding cheapest filters (if they were even changed).

When I currently look under the oil cap, it looks like sludgy, oily shit — but it doesn't look quite as sludgy as it did when I first got it. So maybe my oil changes for the last 20,000 miles with valvoline conventional oil are slowly cleaning things up a bit.

With all that said — it currently has 382,000 miles on it and she runs very strong and doesn't burn oil. Go figure...
 
It is rated for we'll over the normal oil change interval I think, folks that run it, how long do you run it for before doing a change?
 
I do a fresh filter and Valvoline Max Life 5-30 every 3K, not sure how my engine looked when I first got it 20K miles ago, but now it's as clean as a whistle, not a trace of sludge.
 
I know lots of people that ran rotella in high hp applications. Also royal purple. IMO oil is oil if you change it.
 
Rotella is one hell of an oil and it's cheap at Wal-Turd. I have been using T5 in my runner and it loves it. Rotella is so magical if you put it on your bald head you will have a full head of hair in a week, it's true, I read it on the Internet.
