I am not going to argue with the validity of Chaz's comment. If you seek results that will partially emulate what Chaz describes but you want to 'cheap out' try my setup. I used CF 3/4" spacers & FJCruiser front springs which are thicker (higher rate) and longer than stock V6 springs. I got a great drive, less dive, less bounce and better handling for cheap. i was more or less agreeing, spacers are fine, ive used them many times before. my point was that my stock sr5 shocks were terrible. ( im used to a faily stiff/firm ride)so struts & shocks were in order anyway, so (shocks + lift) = adj. coilovers was a more logical solution for me. if i had the x sup. a puck up front probably would have been enough.
 
Hey Guys I'm new here and just upgraded from a 3rd to 4th Gen 4Runner. When I was asking my local 4wd shop about spacers to level out the front they suggested a 2.5in spacer instead of a 1in. I just figured the 1in would level out the front back difference since most of the kits offered have a 1in difference front to back if it's a 2/1 or 3/2.

They suggested I measure the height difference between front and back to see for myself and it was approx. 2 3/4 inches. After measuring it seems the 2.5in would be perfect.

Finally to my question...for those of you who have added an additional 1in to the front did it level your 4runner or do you need more height in the front?

i had the CF 1 IN, didnt think it was enough so raised it 2 in. still a good 3/4 diff. now its right for me.

Suck it up and go for a coil over suspension lift. Spacers actually cut down on suspension travel. Coilovers add it. I'm running the Icon kit, and highly recommend it. Much better ride than the stock Xreas. Adjustable front lift from stock to 3.5", 2" in rear. I haven't adjusted my fronts- they measured out to a 3" lift in front the way they came. The install is easier than with spacers too- Did it myself in an afternoon with no special tools.

So does the 2/1 cf lift have the same problems as the 3/2 cf lift?

I thought I wanted the 3/2 lift but now might be leaning to the Daystar 2.5 lift?

Ultimately, I want the OME or Icon coilovers but those are too expensive right now. And it seems most of us have a common barrier.....the wife/honey girl...."you dont need that"


Sometimes I wish I could "reprogram" her thinking...hehe

Common misconception. There is no added clearance. It is simply a visual upgrade or a functional upgrade to allow bigger tires (which can increase clearance, but no clearance is added from the kit itself)

I actually have been wondering if adding a spacer actually adds ground clearance...low and behold...it doesnt.

Does anyone know why the 4R's come with a front rake anyways...there cant be a positive reason...can there?

I really would love to talk to those 4R engineers and ask them why they decided to take away ground clearance...a whopping 2" from previous years....

They are "ground clearance Hitler's" if you ask me.

Wrong- spacer lift does add ground clearance. you push the shocks down, the truck goes up...

The 4runner is low in the front for crash worthiness, less chance of roll-over (more stable), and more fuel efficiency. What % of 4runners do you think actually get off road? I bet it's much less than 1%. Probably more like 1 in 500.

Man, the more threads I read about lifting and tires the more insanely confused I become. I really wanted the 3/2 cf, but the bump stop and rear stiffness is turning me off. Then the 2.5 Daystar sounded good. Now new shocks and springs...aaaahhhhh....Lord help me.

thanks for the response, but on the other hand if they added clearance, we would just run right over the car in front of us...much better than going underneath....


OK that wasnt a nice thing to say....damn those "ground clearance Hitler's".

i like this idea. spend the $ to do it right or just don't do it.

where would i get this setup? what's all required for a properly setup lift? how much in total for all parts?

i have a stock '03 limited v8 awd with the 18" 2008 limited wheels.

I bought the whole kit from a member here on the forum- if you want his name, PM me. He works at a dealer in Vegas and is a dealer for Icon. I think it was $1299 for the whole thing with shipping. Coilovers, rear shocks, rear springs, and front roll bar spacer kit to move it forward for shock clearance. That's all that's required, nothing else. Install the whole thing, drive for a few days, then take it in for a full alignment.

I wouldn't go back to stock for anything. Most people don't even know it's even lifted until I mention it. I can slam into speed bumps and such with no problems. Very smooth suspension, just a little stiffer than stock.

If you ever want stock ride height, put the stock rears back in and crank the coils back down- they go all the way down to stock height!

Can you explain more about the bumpstop problem? I just bought a Cornfed 3/2 and am wondering if I need to alter anything or will I be ok?

The CF was, and perhaps still is, a solid design whereas the factory bumpstop could not be inserted into the top of the spacer. The DS is like a ring where the bumpstop can be inserted from the top and still have a factory fit and finish, ie: the rubber bumpstop touches the vehicle mounting point as intended.

Let us know if you find this to be true upon receipt of your kit.
 
They try to prevent or at least dampen the effects of bottoming out. At a minimum you will still retain the bumpstops that are off to the side and shown in the pics at the beginning of this thread.
