OME 882 vs. 883

I hate to ask this question, and i'm sure people are sick of getting private messages from me but I can't find a straight forward answer. My current set up is the 881's and I'm looking for more lift. The 881 and 882 share the same spring rate, but the 882 is 20mm taller. Why this is concidered the "heavy" coil I don't know. The 881 and 883 are the exact same height but the the 883 has a 580lb spring rate compaired to the 881 and 882 at 500lb. Meaning that it wont compress as much resulting in more lift......but how much?

So my question is.....what is my net gain in height from the 881's to the 883's? Do I go to the 883's and top out or the 882's and top out? No top out on either? I'm not currently running any additional weight up front and may not be for quite some time. The 882's are obviously going to be 20mm taller and with a top out could net me almost an additional 1.5".

Everyone says that the 882's will be way too rough with no weight, but if thats true than the 883's will be even worse. Sorry for the long post but every site I look at (ttora, expedition portal, here, yotatech) has conflicting information.

The 882's are a 650lb coil, they are much heavier than the 881's.
I would grab the 883's and some topouts. 883's are the medium weight coils.
 
my 882's with my arb are stiff as all hell, beats my guts out, swapping for something else soon.....

(my own personal opinion, other guys like them, i prefer a bilstein soft ride)
 
According to this chart the 882's are only 500lb coil. Thats why this is so confusing.

I am going to the OME 861 in the rear with LC shocks. I just want to try to match the front with the rear as best I can. I also dont want to spend a few hundred dollars swapping out coils to gain an inch.
 
can't help with measurements but i sit pretty much dead level with my lift in my sig, wish i could help more, but what i'm running really has nothing to do with you since your going with a different coil in the rear. ....
 
The problem is there aren't that many people with no off road bumpers that used to have 881s (with or w/o spacers is another variable), measured them, took them off, replaced them with 883s, and then measured again. That's why your question isn't so easy to answer. I wouldn't pay so much attention to the spring rates. Toytec is correct (even though the #s seem weird) - 882s will be stiffer than 883s.
 
How much do you think your front bumper sagged your 883's? If you were 38.5" with out the body lift running 285's at the time, thats roughly an inch and a half higher than I was when I had the 285's and no bumper. So i'm thinking that by replacing with 883's and maybe a top out it should be almost 2 inches higher.

Like I said, I just want to make sure if i'm spending a few hundred to redo it, I do it right.

I understand, I wanted to make sure before I pulled the trigger on my stuff too. I'm really not sure how much my ARB sagged my 883s because the bumper was on there 1st. The 883 should give you ~1" more lift than 881s w/o top spacers. If you add a top out to the 883s you'll get another .5-1" or so. So your math seems pretty close to what you'll end up with.

However, and a big however...
I said earlier in a PM that 883s will ride stiff with a stock bumper and that is true. I actually hated them for the first 3-4 months even with my ARB. Now they've broken in and I wouldn't trade them for any other coils out there. I don't know if you'll hate the ride or not, but I can almost guarantee they will be pretty bone-jarring with a stock bumper for at least the first few months. Now, add in a spacer which preloads the coil and you're talking extra stiff. I personally wouldn't want my CVs at any more of an angle than they already are now with 883s alone. The spacers are going to make them more prone to breaking too. If you're doinf the type of spacer that goes on top of the coil assy, that is no good IMO with 883 because you'll leave yourself with little to no downtravel which suck worse than sitting .5" lower IMO.

If I were you I wouldn't even bother trying to fit 35s without a 2" body lift. You can do it without one, but set aside a couple of weekends to tub your fenders and you'll need a grinder, sawsall, and a welder. Otherwise the rubbing will be horrible off road. If you decide you are going to get a BL, then:
A) Get top spacers for your 881s and call it done
or
B) Get 883s and no spacers

That's what I would do.
Another option is get coilovers since you'll probably add armor and weight in the future anyways.

Sounds like my options are 883's and maybe a trim packer........or adding top outs and trim packers to my 881's

Yes, 882s are the stiffest, then the 883s, then the 881s. The numbers go out of order. I wish they didn't because it really confuses people (myself included when I was trying to figure this all out). Knowing how 883s ride, I personally would not consider adding a trim packer or spacer - for my CVs sake and for my butt and kidney's sake.

881s, top spacers, and a 2" BL will ride by far the best with your set up (as far as OME products go).
883s and a 2" BL would be the next best ride.
882s would ride like sh!t IMO on your truck.
 
Lets just put it this way... I'm picking up some 882s tomorrow.

My 4Runner weighs in at around 5500 lbs. when loaded for a trip (including two people and two large dogs).

My rig is very heavy with the frame reinforced, Tundra 231 brakes, and super heavy duty suspension.

Your rig is much lighter.

DO NOT USE SPRINGS WITH A HIGHER LOAD RATING TO ACHEIVE LIFT.

Select the taller springs (883) with lower compression rating. You will be much happier.
 
My information may have been incorrect. I will check with ARB this morning and clarify. The 883 springs might have a higher spring rate.
 
according to cruiser outfitters the spring rate is 580lb, the 882 and 881 is 500lb. Thats why I keep telling everyone that this is so difficult because of all the wrong information. And if companies know its wrong why wont they fix it?
 
Ok.......I called and talked to ARB in the Washingtom office today regarding spring rates and lengths. The 882 is infact the same rate as the 881, only difference is the height which is a 20mm difference. They are "heavy load", not heavy duty. They're designed to carry additional weight by being taller. The 883's are the heavy duty coil because of the addtional spring rate.
