Alright, in my research of many possible lift options for my '98, I've been trying to get my head around the spring specs for the various options, particularly the OME springs. For example, here are the spring rates and free heights for the front OME options, and also the Tundra TRD spring thrown in for fun:
Model: spring rate (lbf/in) / free height (in) / OME Description
880: 500 / 14.37 / "stock/light"
881: 500 / 14.76 / "heavy"
882: 500 / 15.55 / (no description)
Tundra: ~600 / 14.88 L, 14.63 R
So looking at the OME front springs, they all have identical spring rates (500 lbf/in), but just different heights. Wouldn't the ride from each of these be identical, the only difference being the achieved lift height? And I know the Tundra is a progressive spring, so I'm not sure how it's initial spring rate compares with the other springs. I just read somewhere on this forum that it is about a 600# spring. Maybe someone can clarify.
Now, when you look at the rear springs, it's a little more confusing:
Model: spring rate (lbf/in) / free height (in) / OME Description
906: 220 / 15.35 L, 14.96 R / "Medium"
890: 190 / 17.13 L, 16.73 R / "Heavy"
891: 210 / 16.53 L, 16.14 R / "Heavy Constant"
Now there's not a huge amount of difference, but the 906 does have the highest spring rate of the bunch, but is the shortest. The 890 is actually the lowest spring rate, but also the tallest. And the 891 spring is just in between the other two in both respects. So in reality, how is the ride going to differ between all these springs? Wouldn't the "Medium" 906 give the firmest ride , and the "Heavy" 890 the softest ride? Seems counter intuitive...
I haven't found a good explanation yet. The responses from most places (including ARB) is they just refer to the application guide when selecting the spring, based on how much weight you expect to add to the truck. Although Toytec does list the 880 and 881 shocks as both "Stock weight", and the 906 and 890 as both "Medium".
I'm not planning on adding any extra weight to my rig, but really couldn't I just choose the springs I want based on the estimated lift and desired firmness? For example, choose the 881 fronts, and then the 890 rears for the softest ride in the back? But say I didn't want quite as much lift as the 890 in back, then why not just go with the 891? Both of those options should ride softer than the 906 based on this data, right?
Anyone care to chime in and enlighten me?
