OME vs Coilovers (Price / Value)

I am building an overland rig with a 2008 V6 SR5 T4R. I have been through the stickies and a good number of searches. I still am not sure.

I am on the fence about going with OME because most, if not all, the reviews say they are awesome. I like the idea of coilovers being able to adjust height as weight changes.

Can anyone weigh in on how much performance per $$$ I spend? Are coil over setups worth it over OME?

I looked at these coilover kits I have been looking at. Are there any I missed that I should also look at?

Thanks

I am also looking at the Ironman foam cell coil overs with the rear Icon Overland springs..

I might put in a call to Metaltech this week, they are just across Portland from me.

It seems like the higher end kits like Icon, Fox, or King ride noticeably better, but don't seem as reliable over the long haul like OME. Granted I've only owned OME on 3 vehicles, but they've always been trouble free for 50,000 miles. Between Tacoma and 4Runner forums I could never find long term reviews of the high end coil overs.

It also comes down to the type of wheeling you plan on- high speed desert rallying would be a good reason to get suspension with external reservoirs for added oil capacity to reduce shock fade as things get hot.

It also depends on how much $$$ you want to throw at your suspension. Get the good stuff if you have the money, otherwise OME will ride way better than stock and last a long time.

I would recommend Toytec's superflex rear springs since they provide more travel than OME rear springs and they match up with OME rear shocks from FJ80s.

Which OME shocks?

Ever since I saw the BP-51 they have REALLY peaked my interest. I like that they are position sensitive. Just seems like a really solid shock.
BP-51 Internal Bypass

I think its worth passing over their regular OME stuff (even though everything I hear is positive) for the ICON/King type brands... if that type of shocks suites your needs.

Getting into a 2.5 is a pretty big deal for me... even after trying the 6112, without a rez or anything else, a 2.5 just seems to do everything better and with less effort.

I am sold on the concept is larger shocks and more oil... I can feel the difference.

I chatted with ARB about the BP-51. They are ready yet for 4th gen. They could not give me a ETA and advised not to modify the FJ setup to work on the 4runner.

I'm in Aloha. I drove down to pick up a front tube bumper. They showed them off. Nearly sold them on the spot. If the run a special I probably pull the trigger. I tried talking them into a local discount.

You can get Icon stuff at 20% off a couple times a year for black friday or group buys, similar deals for King and the others too. The high-end stuff is better performing than OME, but for what you listed you will be doing, expedition not baja or rock crawling, OME would be fine too.

With the 20% off especially, the Icon stuff isn't that much more expensive if you get the 2.5" front and 2.0 rears. And like you said, ride height adjustment is pretty simple and depending on how much weight you will be adding, the 2.5" diameter shocks will be a lot better than the OME.

I would do icon for 20%, but I don't think I want to waste the summer waiting for Black Friday. I have been watching for group buys. Are they really that common?

Sometimes you just gotta pay to play...

I did that with my ARB fridge... a week before a trip to Yellowstone.

Paid full price, and id do it again if I had to.

I went with the the Icon 2 setup but instead of the icon uca i got the spc uca as it was cheaper and allowed for more adjustment. Get ahold of chas at total automotive preformance located in las vegas. He is known for giving good discounts on icon.

My 2014 OME suspension is going to be replaced by the end of the month. I have multiple things failing at the same time and have decided I'd rather do several thousand on entirely new suspension, and replacing the UCA & LCA and all the other components, instead of selling the 4Runner and paying a new truck payment.

I dabated between OME and Toytec. I was set on Toytec 3"(the one with 5100's up front) mainly due to price. I didn't care(so I thought) about adjustability. When I ordered them I received an email noting they went on backorder. Since I was ready to pull the trigger, rather than wait I went with the Boss kit because it was in stock. So glad I did. Being able to adjust height to get the CV angles and height combo I wanted ended up being very important.

How is the boss kit? I see a lot of mediocre feedback for Toytec 3" 5100's, but not much for the Boss ones. The suspension sticky does only has the old ones.

Do you have any pics?

I just ordered the OME 885 front setup with Toytec Superflex rear setup to replace my XREAS system. I debated for a while over a few kits.

I've only had mine installed for a couple weeks and I'm not a hard core offroader. Mostly light trails, camping, and I tow. With that said, road manners are great and it's more than I need for what I will do offroad but XREAS was shot and needed to be replaced. I haven't even gotten an alignment yet and I'm on balding tires with 50+k miles on them and I was surprised how well it drives. I'll likely never need the bump stops but at this price point it was still worth it to me. Like I said I wanted the 3" with bilsteins and think it would have fit my needs but in the end the adjustability ended up being worth the extra money. The Boss kit has 600 lb front coils and the 3" kit has 620lb which is the only thing I've read that people didn't like maybe too stiff especially if you have a V6. Obviously I can't comment on longevity yet but I'm glad I bought the Boss kit.

Thats weird because literally every other company sells FJ and 4Runner as the same thing. They are the same chassis as far as I've been able to tell.

They only have the BP-51 available for the FJ 2010+ (same suspension as 5th gen, requires modification to work on the 4th gen)

Taco kit is available which should require no modification. ARB rep I talked to said the 4th gen should be available soon, I know somebody ordered a kit for their GX470 (which *should* be identical to our 4th gen)

When/If they are available, I'll prob. swap my current OME setup for the BP-51, at least in the front. Tempted to do the metaltech LT setup in the rear with Fox or King shocks

OP: I am currently running a full OME setup. Ride in the front is decent, rear is bouncy. Extra weight does soften the rear (I can feel the difference between a full tank of gas and an empty tank) I also currently have no weight in the rear (running with no spare tire and no extra gear usually) When I towed a trailer it was the perfect weight to preload the rear springs. Verdict: OME has excellent value but will make a bouncy DD. Adding weight will dampen it and the springs do soften slightly over time.

They have one to test in WA. They are waiting to install it on an employee's T4R. I asked a few different ways about using the BP-51 from the FJ. They were adamant that it was a bad idea. It could be just legally covering their asses until it is tested. Who knows. It is just more money that I can spend to try something.
