OME with Bilstein not recommended?

I had my step-dad blow out the 5100 shocks made for his Tacoma twice because he didn't have a lift on it. Now it's a Tacoma and not a 4runner but without a lift on the rear I would just do the 4600s. That's probably where this statement is coming from. I think the 5100 isn't meant to run with stock height in the rear.
4600's are great for a 100% stock truck. I put them on my 4Runner when it was still my Dad's years ago. I'll be doing 5100's with 906's in the rear soon.

5100s Specific to the 3rd gen? I've never seen such a thing. Do you have a link?

Bilstein, Innovation and High Quality Since 1873

Fairly new... and they have fully adjustable 2.5" front coilovers and 5160 rears on the way...

I have 5100s all around with OME 881s up front and 890s on the back. Not stiff at all! From what I've read it's the best combo. OME says to pair their springs with their shock. Naturally. They wouldn't say to pair them with a competitor. I think there is plenty of evidence on this forum alone that says the Bilstein OME combo is pretty damn good. ☺️

Im looking at this setup but have only one issue.. The 5100's specify "0-2" lift.
The 881's lift 2.5" and the 890's 3".

My question is are there any issue running this shock out of its specs? Im
looking for the nice ride the 5100's are said to offer, but im looking to go
with the taller springs..

Any advice? Did you have any issue or notice problems.

The front 5100s are adjustable. That's why it says 0-2 lift. I have mine in the second notch up front with 881s and it gave me a 3" lift. You can lift your truck without lift springs 0-2 inches by just adjusting the front 5100s. Wouldn't recommend it though. Lol. The rear 5100s are long travel. I recently changed out my rear springs to toytec superflex that gave me 4" in the rear. And these shocks have no problem with them.

Thanks for the reply.. got it.. Would you happen to know off hand which shock model #'s you used? Is there different varriants of the 5100 series for the same truck?

Im ordering online and shipping is a killer as is, im paranoid about
ordering the wrong parts..

Thanks again!

PS I realize this is going to be a stupid question, but what hardware do I need to order to go with the struts to mount them with new top sections? and do I need the "diff drop" kit or any other parts which should be replaced switching to these coils and shocks?

Diff drop is up to you. I did on mine and I would say yes to keep the CV's in a lower position. I'm not sure of the model number. I ordered them in wheelersoffroad.com so if you wanna check the website I got all 3rd Gen 4runner ones. They are all the same for 3rd Gen. Only thing you might want to get is new springs isolators for the front struts. You can reuse the old ones but they are rubber and probably dried out and cracked so I went ahead and got those. They were like 20 bucks for both. Other than that, no needed hardware as long you are getting ones specifically made for the 3rd Gen.

I know you have a 4th gen, but I've been running Bilsteins front and rear with OME coils for the past year. So far I have not noticed anything wrong with doing that set up.

I've ordered the ome 881 and 891 with Bilstein 5100's. Does anyone else have this setup? Is there anything I'm going to need to know about it? What ring do I need to set the front shocks to in order to have a mild rake? Any info appreciated!

You will want them on the lowest ring. At factory weight, that should net about 2.25" up front and 3" in the rear over stock, giving you an inch or so of rake.

The 3 adjustment notches on the Bilsteins add about 1.1" of lift, respectively, so any higher with your 881s and you will be dead level or slightly reverse.

Does anybody know how I can achieve atleast level, but preferably an inch or two higher in the front? Most people seem to have front rake and I’m trying to avoid that. Any recommendations for a lift which can accommodate this? I’ve looked at the 5100 & OME setup but can’t figure out what to purchase.

So essentially you want to bully dog you 4Runner with the front 2 inches higher than the back. If not, why do you intentionally want a reverse rake?

Yeah, I've heard this too. It sounds like people run them without a problem, just know that Bilstein won't warranty them since it's not a "supported" application. Don't get me started, and ask me how I know...sigh.

This is strange. I have warrantied two sets of Bilstein shocks in the past with no issues regarding the aftermarket springs. They did not even ask.

I am running 4600's with OME rear springs. No complaints but it is a little soft with 1k lbs of pellets back there.

This was a few years back, but Bilstein denied my warranty claim because the silver Eibach spring it was wrapped in from Toytec wasn't an approved application and the shock wasn't "valved" for that. However, Toytec gave me a decent discount when I called and explained the situation, so that was nice.

Everything I've seen says the OME shocks are too stiff and that changing to the Bilsteins made the ride much better.

I really like my OME + Bilstein combo.

Let’s not forget a lot has to do with tires. But I’m running ICONS 2.5 CDC. And in no way is the ride smooth like Baja on road. It drives like a truck!
