I bought my first 4Runner in 09, it was a '99 V6 SR5 4x4 5 speed with a bad O2 sensor and a leaky, damaged sunroof from where the previous owner dropped what I can only assume was his mom on it (or some other item of immense mass), then bondo'd over it. In spite of water pouring down from all corners of the interior when it rained, it was a blast to drive.
I was determined I was going to drive it into the ground. Until last November, when I drove it into the back of a Chevy Impala. Biggest mistake of my life. Anyways, this lead to a new car search. I thought maybe a Taco, an older Toyota pick up, or a Cherokee. All I knew was I wanted 4x4, and I wanted a 5 speed. Well as it turns out, I like cars that hold their value extraordinarily well, to the extent that a 92 truck with 240,000 miles and a rusted out bed still runs about $3500.
Deciding I don't want to pay that much for a car with that little amount of erm.. car, and running out of time with the rental, my wife started looking at the Gen 4s. I was against this, because no manual transmission, but she found one for a good price in Charlotte. I figured what the hell, I'll try it out, but I'm not driving 4 hours for a test drive. Just so happened, the local dealership had one, so to get a feel for it, we went there to see if it would be worth it to go to Charlotte for a test drive. We never made it to Charlotte. We ended up buying it right then, a 2003 V8 4x4 SR5.
It definitely took some adjusting to, but now that I'm not reaching for the third pedal and trying to shift, I can definitely say I'm a fan. Plus, I love the look of the 4th Gens. Probably my favorite looking body style.
