thick blanket or a moving pad bungee'd down I am in CO where we get giant hail storms, I've seen people using these options. I have seen cardboard too but that obviously isn't easy to travel with.

You should be fine without anything. You won't typically encounter large, damaging hail except in the Plains states and along the Front Range. Hail in the Southwest is typically in the mountainous areas, and is usually fairly small.

The only place I lived that had hail on a regular basis was Texas. I was driving in a hail storm there 20 or so years ago. The problem is there a lot of thunderstorms there and most do not have hail. The storm I was in that had hail was not any different than any other storm. There is not time to stop and put a cover on once it starts to hail. It starts quick and ends quick. The strong winds in a hail storm would blow most covers away. It would also be very painful being in a hail storm standing out in it trying to put a cover on. When I was in the hail storm it sounded like someone was hitting the car many times with a hammer. I would be more concerned about the tornadoes that are around during hail storms in Texas.

bad hail damage will total a vehicle, even with insurance how is that worth the headache
friend of mine bought an 09 ridgeline that was in good mechanical condition with only 100k on the clock for 7k because it got totaled out by hail damage. FMV for the truck was probably closer to 15k
prevention > loss mitigation. but also, why not both

I call bs on that thing deflecting bricks. And hail stones can fall at over 100 mph. That's not holding up to those. But, I guess you can hold an impromptu outdoor rave...

I don’t know what extended road trip is but the odds of running into a car damaging hail storm is slim. I live in KC Kansas in the middle of hail, thunderstorms and tornado heaven and a car damaging hail storm happens maybe once a year and usually with plenty of notice to get under something.

lol right, strategically dropped on the strongest part of the assembly, so I guess true in some sense, because you know if a randomly flying brick is going to hit your car, its straight for the windshield!

the kind of hail that can total a vehicle isn't going to give a shit about whatever blanket or cardboard box you put on your vehicle

that kind of hail is very rare. even pea sized hail though can damage a vehicle pretty easily. these are more common and a blanket will help prevent some damage

I went to Harbor Freight and bought 4-5 furniture pads for about $25. I don't carry them all the time but if you're worried about it that much, they don't take up a bunch of space. You could even take them to a place that does auto upholstery and have them use them to make a cover that would fit your truck...If you feel so inclined...

that's what insurance is for, and most minor damage comes out after a few heat/cool cycles.
i'd be more concerned about the blankets/boxes causing micro scratches in the paint than any potential hail damage.
