I need to replace the water pump/timing belt on my '96. Has anyone got a recommendation for a good online parts supplier???

Yeah I checked with the dealer. Not even worth the money saved. Picked up a Toyota pump and belt for $175.00. I am 90% done with the disassembly. I am hung up on removing the crankshaft pulley. The 19mm bolt came off no problem but the pulley appears to be frozen on the shaft. Supposedly there is a pulley puller. There was a few references to this part # (crank pulley puller 09950-50010). I however do not know who makes it or where it can be purchased.

Alright I am sort of new to the Toyota Maintenance scene. I have owned a 2000 Tacoma 4 x 4 with the 2.7L but beside oil changes I never had to put a wrench on it. Now owning my 96 4Runner, 4x4, 3.4L and placing the proper context for my next statement I'll just say what an overwhelming pleasure it is to work on these trucks. The quality is just incredible! I replaced the water pump due to a leak. After removal and inspection I found that the pump had not mechanically failed at the shaft seal but was most likely on thermal transients (heat up/ cool down) due to the cast iron block and aluminum housing for the pump. The new pump includes a gasket with an integral o-ring which I suspect was designed to remedy this problem. How smart is Toyota for that!!! Let me restate this another way. 170,000 miles and the pump was replaced due to a sealing problem NOT due to mechanical failure. Just awesome.

Well I completed the water pump/timing belt replacement. Fired her up this evening. No issues so far and no spare parts left over. Lots of lessons learned for me.

just curious -this is not something I would attempt....

Regarding finding genuine Toyota Parts, you might check with Shannon at Toyota World in Houston (just google Toyota World). I went through them to get my A/C Control head replacement and saved a few hundred dollars. Well worth my time and the wait for them to ship to Charlotte.

I used a standard pulley puller and a 3/8", 3/8" drive socket to remove the crankshaft pulley. I needed the socket to insert into the crankshaft bore so that I could apply force from the pulley puller out past the end of the crank instead of all the way inside of the recess. I inserted the tapered end of the socket into the bore. Make sure you do not grab the pulley at the outer belt guide the next one in is much thicker and will tolerate much more force from the pulley puller. Not that it should require much, mine did because of all the residual gunk that had built up there due to the leak.
