I know I'm gonna get flamed for this but its just something Ive been wondering about since I joined... Why are 2nd Gens lumped in with 1st Gens? They're much closer to 3rd Gens than 1st Gens, looks-wise anyway. By sticking them in the Classics Section mods, ur deluding these poor guys into believing they own a "classic":tsk: Are they not deserving of their own section..? I'd say put them in with the 3rd Gens but I don't wanna piss off those guys too:mad2: So my fellow classic 1st Gen owners, how do u feel about this?

You probably guessed it, its because IFS. 84-85 were the only years different...

86-95, both 1st and 2nd gens are nearly identical, sharing the same front suspension, engine choices, wheels, etc. The 2nd gen was pretty much a refined late IFS 1st gen, hence why 2nd gen brakes fit 1st gens as an upgrade, etc.

The 3rd gen may be similar looks wise, but underneath is completely different. Different frame design, updated components like steering, engine choices, etc. You can't really swap anything between 2nd/3rd gens.

Or to be serious, what CoB said. The trucks are practically identical, and this is already the slowest gen subforum on the board. If we split the 1st and 2nd gen trucks into their own subforums, both subforums would die.

Except for brakes (onto a 79-85 solid axle), center consoles (YAY cupholders!!!), engines (YAY bolt in engine swap), rear diffs (YAY e-locker) rear brakes (YAY no rust).

LOL i sound like a goofball. I agree, 1& 2 are very similar. While they are similar to a 3rd, they have nothing to do with a 4th or 5th.

I also think 3rd gen's deserve their own section, because they are likely the most popular 4r ever built... i still see them everywhere.

The 2nd gens need love for sure(they don't get much). But by lumping them in with the 1st gens it kinda diminishes the Classic designation. I understand why, thank u COB for ur most logical explanation, then just call it 1st & 2nd Gen section. :boom:
 
The second generation 4runner is a bastard-child. Loved by those who are stuck with it, or don't know better.

If 2nd gens had their own dedicated forum section, there would be six threads a week, and it would die a boring death.

But hey, so many mechanical aspects of both are identical that it's convenient for technical questions to get asked in the same place.

Maaaybe I'm a little biased to 1st-gens

5 of which would be about the Minnow, RobMill's rig or riff raff.

In all honesty, the first and 2nd gen are the same vehicle. Only real difference is the removable top on the 1st gen. 2nd gen owners can fix that problem with a sawzall.

This is kinda like when I hear music I listened to in HS on the 'classic rock' stations. I'm like WTF? Since when did GnR become classic rock? I guess since I graduated HS about 25 years ago.

I googled 'what age do things become classic' and found this in Wikipedia:
