Open letter from Starbucks CEO

I hate weighing in on the anti side of the debates, because I think that there is a coordinated agenda to undermine Constitutional 2A rights, but I've never been a huge fan of open carry to make a political point. It irritates the anti-gun leftie weenies and leads to situations where everyone overreacts and starts do delcare "gun free zones," whether they have legal authority to do so or not. In many states the "no gun" declaration has no legal bearing and it's more of a polite request, and if you CCW who the hell even knows?

I open carry only when I hunt, since a hunting sidearm tends to be much larger and heavier than something you'd want to conceal. I don't want the bad guys to know I have a gun, I don't want some liberal d-bag to call the cops because I'm open carrying so that I can be harassed since the mere SIGHT of a gun caused them to experience a sense of irrational fear.

If I ever move to some remote frontier town in the wilderness where a gun is like a hammer or any other practical tool, I'll probably open carry since everyone in an area like that is on the level and won't freak the hell out.

i hear of sections on arizona that are like this...

If i were Seattle's Best, then i would have an open letter stating the opposite....

Maybe ChikFila needs an open letter....

And yeah, even before this, i don't go to Starbucks...too expensive. My coffee has more cream and Splenda in it than actual coffee beans anyways.... :D

Earlier this year this same guy said: if your against gay marriage, we don't want your business.

Screw Starbucks!

Whoops, I didn't catch the OC part even though it's in the letter enough that I should have noticed. I'll attribute that to lack of sleep.

I don't really follow any of these political pro-gun/anti-gun agendas, nor am I for or against either one, so please don't take this as a stab to either side; but man these must be some seriously straight gangsta Starbucks people are going to if they need a gun to feel safe while sipping on their frappuchino :gun6::tea:

I'll continue to open carry thank you. I will be applying for my concealed permit soon, but open carry will be my first choice. Why? Because when I need it, there won't be time to pull my shirt up and unholster my gun.

You need to practice then.

I think you're short sighting the situation. You see, trouble in the form of bad people, doesn't always stay in its bad neighborhood so even your safe neighborhood Starbucks can and will fall within the sights of such trouble.

Coffee store robbers now know Starbucks has requested that gun owners not bring their means of defense with them into the store, ultimately reducing the probability a robbery would be stopped by someone with a firearm. I now know this as well and will be sure to not enter their stores because the probability the store will be robbed is greater than it was before this publicly announced request.

I didn't mean for you or anyone else to take this the wrong way because honestly, I see your point of view and the opposite point of view as well. That's what I meant by I am not trying to take sides, nor start a debate, I just found it funny if you step back and think about the situation, lol.

I hear you and I didn't take any offense at your thoughts. I was simply pointing out for others not understanding your attempt at a joke that labeling a gun-free zone as such doesn't guarantee safety for anyone inside and in some cases serves as a stress-free stomping ground for criminal activity.

Why do you say that? There are plenty right here on this forum who need a gun to feel safe in the normal course of their daily lives and it has nothing to do with gangstas or coffee.

Rich folks who legally carry guns must be high on your list to die, isn't it?

Does trouble only occur in bad places?

Did the Navy Yard victims know that they will have to defend themselves that morning when they woke up? Did any victims of a mall shooting know that they will be shot at? Did the Colorado movie theater victims know that a heavily armed wacko would enter their Batman premier?

Were all those places filled with gangsta?

"Man, these must be some seriously straight gangsta Colorado movie theaters people are going if they need a gun to feel safe while watching a movie and eating popcorn!"

There....i re-worded your comment above...is it still funny to you? Are you still confused about the need to carry a gun legally in places that are not gangsta filled?

I don't consider carrying a gun (with license) to be all that horrible of a thing. It is rather comfy. So, i am not going out of my way to carry a gun legally. But, at the same time, i will have something to defend myself and my family against if terrible things were to happen around me.

No one can guess or predict the future where they will need a gun...as has been shown in recent tragedies.

I rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

I've always wondered what the anti gun types use as a justification for disarming a society and turning us all into sheep.

Humans are still the same brutal, selfish, violent, hateful animals that crawled out of caves 50,000 years ago.

What great enlightenment has happened in the last 30-40 years that suddenly makes that not so?

All these wealthy liberals raising their gender neutral children on a gluten free diet of fair trade animal friendly vegetable matter and driving earth friendly hybrids to the Obama rally need to realize that there is a very thin line between what makes us smile at our neigbor with a cup of coffee in our hands as we get our morning paper from our manicured Suburban lawn and beating his head in for a sack of flour during a famine.

The atrocities my grandparents described during and after WWII in Europe will shatter any delusions of a polite society, or that we're nothing short of violent primates in the universe's largest monkey house.

No need to go back far...see New Orleans during Katrina...we haven't evolved one bit.

To put it simply, every step of your day is a game of odds. Some things are nearly impossible to mitigate. Others, I'd rather have a fighting chance. If that means lawfully carrying a weapon to defend my family, myself, and/or others in extreme situations, I like my chances better with a weapon, and one that I'm proficient using. Luckily my rights in this country support that. :usa2:

Here's what happened - back in 2010, the Brady Campaign decided it needed some publicity and targeted Starbucks for a boycott because Starbucks wouldn't come out and ban firearms in its stores. Starbucks responded by saying that they comply with local gun laws, and where local laws allow open carry, Starbucks doesn't prohibit it. So a bunch of Second Amendment supporters and open-carry extremists started a "Starbucks Appreciation" campaign, and made a point of going to Starbucks with weapons on their hips and conducting pro-gun rallies outside Starbucks stores, etc. This caused several other anti-gun activist organizations to call for more boycotts, and some extremists started going to stores and confronting the open-carry cowboys, and now Starbucks is caught in the middle of a fight it never wanted to be in.

Don't blame Starbucks for any of this. Starbucks has been unfairly targeted and wrongly represented by both sides. Starbucks is not anti-gun. Starbucks is not pro-gun.

Best explanation so far. Thank you.

all of these threads make me want to move to a state where the constitution exists....

try open carrying into a starbucks in NJ (my home state) or Philly where I live now, you'll be tackled to the ground and arrested in a second.

I'm pretty sure the constitution exists in PA LoL. In fact if you read it bro you would see that each state has the right to make laws (even those concerning guns) and that those laws are enacted differently in each state.

So CA has a right to enact different laws then TX with regards to gun legislation.
