Opinions - 2002 4Runner Disc Brake Upgrade

I'd like to get the opinions of those that have done the disc brake upgrade - I am looking at these:

Buy Disc Brakes Australia 4000 Series Rotor DBA4792XS at Advance Auto Parts

which they show as an exact fit for my 2002 4Runner, however the Tundra upgrade threads I see here show Tundra 231mm (13WL) rotors/calipers.

These rotors (linked above which I really like) are 319mm which is significantly bigger (and again note they are specified as an exact fit).

Any one have an idea if the Tundra rotors being smaller are a requirement of the Tundra 13WL caliper?

My stock calipers have always had more than enough steam, it's the rotors that have warped so if I can go with the bigger 319mm rotors I will go that way hands down.

Thoughts?

I've been putting this off for a while but after putting 2.5K miles on a new rental truck last week the pulsation from my stock rotors is more than annoying to me now.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the 231 mm measurement on the Tundra upgrade is for the pads. The Tundra rotors are the same diameter as stock, just thicker.
 
We kind of cross posted Jay....

So are we saying that is the swept surface area of the pad?

That I what I am not finding under the specs on the auto parts stores (yet).

Tundra rotors are also 319 mm across. The 4runner and tundra rotors are the same diameter, but tundra ones are WAY thicker. Read the tundra brake thread if you still dont understand.

I did read the Tundra brake threads. ;-)

But if you are going to answer a thread, answer it completely.

231 mm is 9.09". What I was getting at is that the swept area? Saying it's the "pad size" is not answering my question.

I did answer it, read again.

You asked if the rotors you linked (which say they fit 4RUNNERS) would fit for the tundra brakes. I said the tundra rotors are way different, ie.. THEY DONT FIT.

Tell the website you have a tundra and youll get the ones you need. Damn, its not that hard.
 
The Tundra rotors will not fit the 4runner calipers. The overall diameter between the rotors is the same, but the tundra rotors are thicker.

You could shave a set of 4runner pads down to compensate for the thicker rotor, but you remove about half the life of the pads doing it.

Not to mention you don't get the benefit of more surface area (bigger pads against the rotors).
 
If I may, gentlemen, I have a question regarding brake pads and rotors for my 96 4R SR5 4X4 5spd- I need to replace them both and my tech/mech is GREAT and doesn't mind when I buy my own parts and bring them to him so...can any of you recommend some brands for me, please? I don't go off-road (yet) and do a lot of in-town/city driving. Sorry for straying a bit here but I have been searching the 3rd gen forums and haven't really come across anything useful...
Also, yes, I am a chick BUT I *LOVE* my T4R and being raised around race cars and the track...well, I love just about anything that involves a combination of the three!

Tell me more about upgrading to the Tundra brakes on the front. I have 16" w/285 70s (Mich), no lift or any mods to the body (yet!).

Would like to share my experience with Brake Performance,i have installed a set of dimpled and slotted rotors on my FJ60 and very happy with the outcome i drove my LC to Pismo 2 years ago fully loaded and didn't have enough time to break in the pads and rotors i was surprised how well it slow down the vehicle coming down the hill without any hint of brake fade.


I have installed this set up on 2 other vehicles (not mine) and the owners were very happy with the outcome,one is an ML350 and an LC 80 series.

What i like the best about them is their lifetime warranty on the rotors and made in the U.S.A.:thumb3:
 
1. the 231mm dimension refers to the tundra brake caliper, not the rotor.

2. The 4Runner rotor has the same diameter as the tundra rotor but is significantly thinner.

3. I would recommend that you go for the slotted rotors instead of the cross-drilled rotors shown in the link. Slotted rotors absorb heat better than cross-drilled rotors

There is a method to the madness of my questions however. Perhaps I can explain a little better.

Here is the link to the 2005 Tundra V8 rotors:

Now, the braking surface thickness on BOTH is 22 mm.

So, if you are following me.... Either These specs are out to lunch OR the difference is purely in the calipers and swept area of the pads.

If I am annoying anybody with this, please feel free not to respond, but as far as the rotors are concerned 2+2 is not equaling 4 here.
 
Specs are out to lunch.

4runner rotors are .86 or .87 thick. Tundra rotors are 1.1 thick.

Not to mention the extra thickness in the tundra rotors offsets the outboard (iirc) braking surface.

You might want to go to an autoparts store and go look at the rotors for a 4Runner and a 2005 Tundra. When you actually have both of them in front of you, you'll really see the difference.
