Opinions on exhaust exit location..

Why go to rear? Why not the side? BESIDES the obvious reasons that some exhaust might enter the cab, just like they do with the rear window down...Has anyone done this ? I did a search and didn't find anything close.

I've heard that some states require the exhaust to exit past the rear axel. Also side exhaust would get pinched shut or ripped off when wheeling.

I think side exhaust looks terrible.

That's enough to justify the rear for me.

My brother-in-law has his exiting out the side on his 01 Tacoma. It doesn't look all that bad, but I wouldn't recommend it for a 4runner. First, it might cause some issues with fumes and the back window down and also noise. Second, someone might hit or rub against the exhaust tip when they are getting into the back seat. They can get hot and could cause some injury/discomfort if a passenger did hit it. Third, if you wheel at all you will probably crush the tip on a rock. Lastly, you wouldn't be able to get sliders or use the stock running boards anymore due to interference.

I've been thinking about alternative placement for the exhaust as well as part of another project. The way you have it there causes the same reaction as above for me. Trail liability.

I'd have that ripped off in less than a minute offroad... Hell, I've cut back my factory exhaust 3 times now from crunching it offroad.

Best idea, just leave it alone.

Yeah....pinched mine a week ago and now i got to trim it up. and that was in the stock location......on the side of the vehicle, i would not advise.

I do like the idea of this though, be adding this extra to my rear bumper when the time comes.
