Opinions on Firestone Destination AT's off-road

I'm thinking about getting a set of Firestone Destination AT's, and I was wondering if anyone has any experience off-road with them. They're the #2 rated On-/Off-Road All-Terrain tire on TireRack based on the user reviews, and they're also a very good deal (around $700 OTD). I've seen a lot of people on TireRack and on this forum say good things about them, but mostly the comments are relating to on-road characteristics. If any 3rd Gen guys have used them off-road, I'd love to hear your feedback.

To me they were okay. Like most other A/T's they were awful in mud, but on dry surfaces and grass they bit down pretty good. Also on snow they were a lot better than my damn mud terrains. On the road they are great, really quiet and mind balanced easily. Overall I found that they were a good tire for the money and lasted a good amount of time, considering the hell I put them through

Thanks Dous.... Being good in the snow is important to me too. As long as they are decent offroad, I think I'll probably go for them.

Wow that price seems high. What size? I got those tires in November for $133. each in 31 x10.50x15 mounted and balanced from a local garage. So about $530. I only bought four. At the time it looked like Sears was running a buy 3 get 1 free for the same tire. I never checked the price with them, though. My mechanic didn't even charge me the usual "disposal fee" (maybe that's a VA thing?) because my old stock size had enough tread left to pass inspection and be recycled on someone elses truck. I think they do fine in the snow.

265 70 R16... This what I'm seeing on the Sears' website. I'll definitely shop around and you can always talk the price down on tires. I figure I can get them somewhere for between 600-650.

I've been thinking about putting those on my '97, however going with 265/75R16. That tire and size seems to be getting good reviews. Tirerack's got them at $154 a pop in that size.

The General Grabber AT2s are a better bargain in my opinion. They are extremely popular in the 285 size. I had them in 31x10.50 on my Nissan and they were one of the best set of tires I ever had.

My roommate (Adio3x) has them on his 5th gen currently. He's liked them and they seem to have been decent every time we've gone offroading with them. He's upgrading to something else though b/c they don't have as much thread and grip as he'd like. I think they're a decent tire for the price though. If you're not looking for a really aggressive a/t then they'll suite your needs. You should be able to get them right around $600 by the way. I looked in the getting them a few months back and firestone quote me just over $600 and then were gonna give me a discount on top of that.

I just got mine put on about a month ago. Haven't been offroad with them, but the last snow that we got was just a few days after I had them put on, and they handled great. I had a hard time getting them to even break loose, and really felt that they had good grip on the slippery surface. Since then, haven't had any inclement weather, but even for just daily driving they've got a good feel to them, and are by no means noisy.

I got mine at a local Firestone dealer, and the guy said they were running the special thru the end of January. Also, the salesman drove a LC, so we got to shoot some **** while we were discussing the price He essentially charged me a $1 over cost iirc. Set of 265/75/16's, mounted, balanced, etc... plus the disposal fee all for $575. I added the $45 for the lifetime roadside hazard protection, so total bill came to around $620.

I'd suggest checking with a local firestone dealer if you have one, and see if you could get them to square you up with the same deal that they were offering last month. Worth a shot at least.

Thanks all for the input... Gonna check out the local Firestone dealer this weekend to see what kind of deal they can give me. I think they'll be perfect for what I need.
