Optima batteries

i am seeing some posts about fit issues. Can anyone tell me the correct one to get? It seems like I am getting a hundred different answers from 110 different sources
 
If you just want a run of the mill Optima battery, get the red top.
If you have a stereo (as I see in you sig you must) or a good amount of electrical equipment, get the yellow top.

D35 is what they say you need.

Be sure to research it. If I recall, the yellow top is purely a deep cycle battery which is not designed for the demands from cranking the starter. I recall seeing a dual function starting/deep cycle (that would be good if you pull from the battery often with the engine off) on their website but can't recall what color top. Either that or their starting battery.

IMO, I think the Optimas are overated and overpriced. Just get yourself a Diehard or Interstate
 
Odyssey PC1700MJT Battery
there the main brand of batteries, stinger ,optima, kenitik, are rebadge lables of that brand, also they charge way over what its worth. for example the stinger power2 sp1700 is the same as my Odyssey PC1700MJT Battery, the difference is the price, stinger charge like amost 400 for it and Odyssey charges not even close to 300 for this, its the same battery with a different lable on it.

Not Correct. Below is a quote from their website.

"The YellowTop is one of the only true dual-purpose batteries available. It is commonly used in any application that demands cranking power and heavy cycling. The factory Batteries in or 4Runners are 720CCA. Just make sure you get the same rated CCA or better that will fit. Optimas are pretty good batteries I just think they are over priced. The D35 only has 620CCA.

I don't think 100CCA will make it or break it. I load tested the battery in my 04 recently and it only measured 450CCA for a 5 year old battery. It has been in the teens and 20s here for the last week in the morning and it has started everytime. I am also in the market for a new battery based on that test because any time a battery is 20% below the rated value it is showing signs of deterioration and it is time to be replaced.

I maintain large facility UPS systems with 30+ batteries and that is the standard we go by for replacement. Granted those are all "deep cycle" Batteries but it even applies to our engine generator starting batteries. This is all at an Air Traffic Control Tower. We maintain 4 large facility UPS and 7 Engine generators, some as big as 225KW V-12 Detroit Diesels, And those are still considered small.

One more thing to remember our battery post are reversed. If you are looking at the battery with the posts closest to you the Neg is on the left and the Pos is on the right. That is the way they are usually displayed in the stores. Most batteries you see in the stores the Pos is on the left and the Neg is on the right.

Panasonic 105D31L-MF
12 inches long
6 3/4 wide
7 7/8 tall

Thanks for the correction. I had commented based on memory and I admit not being on the Optima website in awhile and my memory not being what it used to be (either age or a 70's thing or both :biggrin2: ).

No Problem... We all suffer from sometimers, some just more than others. I am in the More Than Others group for sure. If I could not write things down or al least remember where to find the info I would be lost half the time.

I can relate to the 70s thing although my time was the late 80s early 90s :bonk: Then you throw my ADD thing in there and it is one big mess!!!!!:cheers:

I have been using a optima red top battery for several years. You need a 34R. The R stands for reversed terminals (+ and-). Without the R you have to modify the cables. The R batteries are harder to find. I got mine from Summit.
 
Looking to buy an optima yellow top battery to replace the stock 4runner one. Does any one know if any optima battery will fit in the stock location without any modifications?

As I said 34r fits right in with no mods.
 
I'm running 2 red tops. One is in the stock location, the other is on a platform I built between the V8 airbox and the firewall. I had to put cable extensions on the stock location because the terminals are in opposite spots, but I believe Optima makes a reverse terminal model so you won't need extensions
