Using your vehicle to secure a loan is a lot harder than you think, I tried to do that for some cash for tuition and couldn't get a bank to do it despite me wanting a lot less than my vehicle was worth

Join a credit union. Much better to deal with in situations like that. Did that exact thing to get some extra cash to cover one of my kid's tuition last year.

You guys are forgetting the 4runner is a want... not a need. It is not basic transportation nor is it really efficient nor anything really. So if it's not a need then who really cares? Obviously most of us can afford one so the only question is how much are you willing to lose every few years. If you can afford a new one every year then go for it. If you want to keep it for 15 years that's fine too.

Remember that buying a vehicle such as the 4runner is a frivolous expense so any talk of saving money and the 4runner should not be mentioned in the same sentence.

I certainly bought mine with the intent that it be used as my daily driver. It seems to check off a lot of the boxes I need for that purpose.

Sure, I could have accomplished that goal with something cheaper and more efficient but this thing just rang my bell somehow. I think of it as basic transportation with a lot of class!

Bought my wife a new Pathfinder LE in 2001. It has 146K miles on it. It's been paid off for 11 years. 11 years of no car payments is a huge amount of money. We live in Pa and I've dropped $2600 in rust repair in the last few years. That's a pittance compared to ongoing car payments for the last 11 years.

Or you can get the best interest rate you can and let the money you would otherwise given to the stealership outgrow the interest you're paying on the loan. Not that hard to do. Just my additional 3k in my pocket after 60 months...

I will throw in my .02 cents as I had been finding the mid-cycle refresh more and more appealing and I live in Chicago which is also a rust prone area.

While I love my 4Runner, visually I much prefer the early 5th gen Trail Editions and more recently the facelift SR5 and Trail Edition. The early 5th gen SR5/Limited with the ground effects look is just starting to wear on me. I know it's something I could change but then I start to think about how much that would cost, and the fact I would never see a return. I start to think about the rust potential and the fact that I just hit 51k miles. It makes me wonder if like you pointed out it makes more sense to run the thing into the ground and just set aside money for when it's completely worn out, or wait another few years and trade it on a new 4Runner?

Based on the face-lift being effectively cosmetic only, I'm going to wait to see what the 6th Gen turns out to be, I also think I wan't to get on a facelift upgrade cycle, as these seem to be the most kitted out versions... love my 13' but should have waited for a 14'.
