Options for Limited upgrades

backstory:

Bought my 2014 4Runner limited in fall 2013, one of the first ones off the boat from what I understand and dealer did some trading to get her for me quick so I could immediately take her on a 1500mi road trip!

I switched jobs a year later which came with a company truck so the 5th gen went to the wife and her 2007 SR5 got sold. And now we're to the point where the new is worn off and time to start having fun and making some upgrades.

I have read tons of stuff on lifts and XREAS so I'm up to date on that but it seems that most of the builds on here are SR5 or TE.

Is anyone building up their limited? Bumpers? Changing trim? Do the aftermarket front bumpers fir with the the front of the limiteds?

Searched around but haven't really found anything on this specific topic. Feel free to correct me!

Check out miguelon, kromealt, and bimrunner's build threads, those are three off the top of my head around here. I have a limited, but so far have only changed rims and tires. Budbuilt sliders should arrive hopefully this coming week.

There's plenty of stuff out there and I think the biggest limiting factor is X-REAS so if you plan on ditching it, there shouldn't be much else stopping you from the bigger ticket items. I have a 2016 LE with BudBuilt Sliders and hidden winch mount. I decided not to go with a full bumper to keep things a bit more stealthy and approach angles aren't generally a concern for me in Florida. There's fewer front end accessory type items for the LE because of the front end but aside from that most everything should fit but might require a tad more finessing.

Do you have any rubbing issues with the 275's? (I assume you are still stock suspension) How has your gas mileage fared?

I do still have the stock suspension, had a little rub, but pushed the fender liners as forward as I could. Due to the limited fender liners being longer, I still had to use a heat gun and push them a little more forward in a couple spots. Honestly I havent noticed a drop in mpg, I wonder if the 20's and stock tires weighed as much as the 17's and ko2's? I think it may even ride better, I'm set at about 38 psi.

You can look up my thread as I swapped wheels, tires, TRD suspension, front & rear covers, trail rockers, trail hood.

Interesting. I kinda thought, along with others, Toyota put the pizza cutters on there to compensate for the full time 4wd always being on which decreased MPG. But with less tire on road = less friction = better MPG.

I think I'm just going to opt for the 265's when I make the switch. I don't wheel enough to justify the the extra width. Thanks for replying!

I have a 2012 so as far as trim/lights it's a bit different, but I've moved from the 20's to 17's with 285's. I also kept XREAS on mine since I STILL have warranty left and did the TOYTEC 3/2 spacer lift. I had to do the fender mod to accommodate the larger tires. It rides pretty normal still and in the city my MPG's are a touch lower but on the highway they're the same. Once my warranty runs out I'll switch out the suspension, but for now what I have works since I do wheeling here and there.

It might be worth adding, I pull a tool trailer for work a lot, and I usually average 15.5 mpg or so, but I believe it was about the same when I had the stock tires. It wasn't any more than 16 mpg at least. So I don't get near the gas mileage others do, but I'm almost always pulling a trailer during the week and my foot is heavy lol.

To be honest I don't think it makes much difference between 265 and 275, I went with 275 because they were actually cheaper than the 265 at my tire shop for some reason.

I have a limited and you need to do a little more research when dealing with the bumpers and suspension which are the main deltas. Other than that they are pretty much the same. I ditched XREAS ASAP then you have 1 less variable to deal with. From my experience skid plates fit just fine, sliders fit just fine (need to remove side skirt but there is a kit to make it look more finished), roof rack, new wheels/tires, light bars, electrical system, intake, exhaust, etc... Man I really need to do a blog but I've been too lazy. Want pics of my setup just let me know, happy to help how I can.

I wouldn't trade the more polished interior for anything. Personally I just can't stand cloth seats. But hey everyone has their own opinions.

When you talk aftermarket bumpers you need to be careful if it is a half replacement where you keep some of the limited bumper (might have to chop or keep the grill) or you completely remove it. All depends on what you're looking to do and how much mods your wanting.

Just remember with time and money you can do pretty much anything.

I ditched the 20's for 17's running KO2 275/70/17 (E) with 0 rubbing. I did originally go with 265/70/17 (C) and swapped them for larger not long after. Somewhat wish I would have went 285s but oh well. I did some weight calcs and those factory 20's are very HEAVY even only being 7" wide (not 7.5"). I think with TRD 17" and 275 E KO2s your gaining about 6-7 lbs per wheel which is a lot of rotating mass if you're concerned with MPGs. Now I'm pretty sure you didn't buy the 4Runner with the intent of getting Prius MPGs but to each their own.

Personally MPG don't bother me too much but road noise does which I went crazy on the sound deadening material under the floors and doors. I might second guess myself if gas prices keep going up.

Coming back to the point, for my setup I still get ~16.5-17.1MPG still even with those tires, light bars, roof rack, and a lift.

I need to put some sound deadening in mine also, tires are still quiet, but it would improve the sound quality a ton. I would probably get a lot better mpg, but most of my driving is around town, I get way better when on the highway. Still plan on lifting it as soon as I get the money, gas is still 2.29 here.

Gas is ~$2.40-$2.60 in Austin, TX into rural parts heading toward the coast. Likely still hurricane pricing from Harvey which created a little supply shortage for a while. Anyways for the sound deadening, it was tedious and a little pricey but so well worth it. Last night I was coming home from dove hunting running 90mph (speed limit is 85) along I130 and it wasn't near as bad as it was previously. Also could of been that I was shoot dove all day with no ear plugs..

For sound deadening, I sprayed the fender wells heavy with bedliner material, pulled all seats and carpet to put Dynamat, Dynaliner, or Dynapad. I still need to pull the headliner as the only true noise is coming from the roof rack now but my motivation for that at this time is very minimal. You'd be amazed like the area under the front console has nothing. Meaning it's just sheet metal between the outside and the interior cabin. Same for the rear tire wells from the inside. Good thing our trucks are well engineered as everything pulls apart and comes back together rather easily.

Yeah, I have replaced the rear bumper twice in the last 18mos. Once due to a small tree next to my driveway and once due to a ram 3500 rolling into it. I looked at aftermarket bumpers but it seemed everything required part of the rear bumper on the sides to be used and that just didn't work out.

MPG really isn't a concern for me. I am looking at ditching the 20s and trying to determine what wheels to pick up, either some TRDpro or something aftermarket.

Did you lift when you ditched the XREAS?

Yeah pretty much have to. There are guys that have done spacers with XREAS but I personally wouldn't recommend it. Just replace it with something worthwhile.

Here is my 13 limited

Icon stg 1 with 275/70/18 ridge grapplers on level 8 Mk6 18x9 0 offsett

Had to do the fender liner mod and remove the small inner piece of the front mud flaps for rubbing. i lost 2 mpg HWY going to the 18s from 275/55/20 cooper zeons. It is about the same mpg around town. Gained about 20lbs per wheel. The ride quality is better with the 18s and icon suspension over the xreas and 20s. There is noticeably more brake pedal input required with the bigger tires. if you have the 3rd row seat and dont have a use for it there is all kinds of stuff you can do with the space back there like a stealth sub or storage box.
