Orange backlight on Camry/Solara NAV

So.... I checked my original radio and found 23 of those orange LEDs needed :) .... anyone good with a sodering iron? Worth a shot?? Also.. can someone post how to open up the face of the NAV system to get to the board? ouuuuuu.. I would just love orange backlight!!!

and does anyone know if 23 is enough for the NAV unit?? I am guessing yes.... my guess is that is only uses 18 or so LED (we would even have a few spares!:)

Use your stock LED's from your old stock head unit and you will be fine. The voltage difference between the green and orange LED's is approx .1 volts. Since you probably will have the voltage lowered by the lighting knob on the dash, voltage would not be a problem. When I recieve my NAV unit this is the first thing I'm going to do before installing it. I'll let you know how it went.

Let me know how this goes. I tried it... i was unable to remove an LED from the original HU without destoying it. Now.. i don;t have a ton of soldering expirance.. so maybe someone that knows what they are doing can do this. Any pointers would be appricated. thx.

Yikes! Your iron is tooooooooooo hot! I just use a radiocrap (radioshack) iron with adjustable wattage. works great. I actually already tried it with an old Tacoma radio I had laying around. It is time consuming but is quite easy. I'll let you know how it goes. I should be digging into mine when it arrives in a week.

Hey Greg,

Well I just ordered 50 LED's for like $10. Really cheap. Putting them on without damaging the unit and removing the green ones is a real pain though. Like I said, two days, a good soldering rig, a steady hand, and a LOT of patience.
 
Greg I noticed something this morning on the setup. Does the LED's on your NAV unit dim with the dimmer control on the dash?
