Orange Virus tune in progress

I received an email form Matt a little over a week ago. If it’s not ready by end of the year I will look at other options. Are there any other tuners besides Vivid Racing and OV? Email response below:

Hello,

Yes we are, and we should have it ready some time this year.

Well, their website has changed quite a bit from the last time I visited it. Looks like they've pushed their non-Toyota stuff over to a Philippine site and have updated the pages for all the Toyota vehicles.

Maybe they've realized they've taken on way too much and are now concentrating on just the vehicles they've listed, but I'm still not convinced with their replies, it just seems like they say the same thing for the 4runner but never come through. And now they seem to have added Corolla vehicles onto their list of vehicles!

I really do hope they pull it off and produce something for the 4runner some day...

I received version 1.2 of Mat's 4Runner tune about a month ago. He's working on it although it's been painfully slow. With the last tune he stated he's still working on transmission settings to go with it.

I am happy with what I've received so far and can't remember how horrible the stock tune is.

Tune seems to have a great acceleration and torque band from zero to highway speeds. Hunting for gears at highway speed is all but gone. Pedal response is a non issue.

I'm heading to Colorado this week so I'll get a good test to compare to my last trip before this tune. There is one shift range I think needs a little work but nothing that creates a problem. It seems third gear comes a little early when accelerating to highway speed. I'd prefer second to kick in a bit longer.

It's taken 7-8 months from the time he sent me cables until this latest version. I think he'll have a good product if he can just focus on it. I wished he would buy a 4Runner for his shop truck. If he did, I'm sure this would move much faster as witnessed by his obsession with continual work on his Tacoma.

It might also go much faster if someone local to him had a 4Runner they'd drop off for him to work with. I get the sense the 4Runner is being done from logged data and not from local Dyno runs.

Did anyone try the new tune files yet? Are there p5f files available?

OVTuning is changing their approach. Instead of providing tune files they are working to provide the software so we can do our own tuning.

Problem is, nothing is available yet. They haven't released any tune files for probably a year or more, and all I have are absent promises that something is coming. It's supposedly in the "next big release" but Matt won't commit to a date. He's horrible with communications and it takes months sometimes to even get a question acknowledged. When acknowledged there is only vagueness about what's coming and when.

I was once optimistic about this but no more.

Would one even feel a 20hp increase after 10 miles of driving? $600 for bringing hp numbers from barely adequate to barely adequate plus 20hp seems like throwing $600 away. Coming from my past experience of diesel trucks, where you could actually see real hp increases with a tune, this seems silly.
Can't you get 20 hp increase from a K&N windshield sticker alone? lol

My big focus wasn't HP gain. You won't notice much. I just wanted to get better throttle response and to be more purposed in shift point to get out of the constant 4-5 upshift/downshift.

You would need at least a 50hp bump to really notice anything.

Can't imagine such figures without a turbo or supercharger.

It kinda depends where in the RPM range it is too. 50hp gained by raising the rev limiter doesn't provide any meaningful value. And that's where a lot of the tunes get a few more peak hp - by just increasing the rpm range.

What the engine needs is 25hp more at 2000 rpms. That translates to an extra 50+ ft lbs more and isn't very realistic from a tune. But that's really what it needs to make a difference at normal cruising rpms. The 1GR only makes about 90hp at 2000 rpms. Even the little turbo 2.0L in the Lexus models makes around 100hp at 2000 rpms. The TTv6 rumored to be in the next gen Tundra makes about 160hp at 2000 rpms. That's the engine we really want. Or something like it. Even the old 2UR v8 makes about 110hp at 2000 rpms. Doesn't sound like a lot - but that extra 20hp over the 1GR would go a long way toward comfortable highway cruising.

bumping this for more info. OV tune is out for the 4runner and a custom one from KDmax price is $300-400 by a kd max tuner. DIY is tad more since you need to buy the map and VF tuner software with device

To add to JetBoy's comment. It depends on the power gained across the entire rev range. Peak horsepower isn't that important for us because we rarely see 5600 RPM. The increase in tq/hp at ~1500-3000 RPM is what I would be most interested in. The gains in this area of the curve would improve throttle response, passing, and gradeability (less downshifting in cruise control).

from tacoma world forums , probably most popular tune kdmax

How to Get More Horsepower from a Toyota 4 Runner ECU Flash by VRTuned - YouTube

Skip to 3:00 for good view of dyno plots before and after

VRtuned with 91 octane is showing a solid 15-20 ft-lb gain from 2500-4000 RPM

Thats close to a 20% gain where it matters most.

believe its the same with the KDmax or OV tune. My take away from these tunes, pretty much all the same minimal gain in HP/TQ. Increased HP/TQ in lower range for better drive-ability. Cheapest route is probably finding a forum member who can flash the kdmax tune from $300-400 range.

Right, they should all be more or less the same in gains on the same vehicle. Use 91+ Octane, advance timing, lean the fuel out to 14.7-15.1 at lower loads and richen up to ~13.5-14.1 at higher loads. Remap cam tables. Revise DBW throttle map to be closer to 1:1 actual vs commanded position. At some point you are pushing emissions and ruining your cat/O2 sensor, not to mention knock threshold.

If full ECU access tuning was available for my 21 4runner I would already have it. If nothing more than to take advantage of 91+ octane and slightly more aggressive mapping than factory. To me, 20% gain is not minimal for just tuning and fuel.
