Oregon Backcountry Discovery Route 2017 Planning

I know I can't make this meet and greet but could do one afterwards? I would love to maybe swing by for a day or two on the Overland trip, I have my son and he's done a few with me but its difficult on a 7 yr old to be gone for 6 days. Let me know and I drive to Portland so could do a meet and greet there too

Just to clarify, are we talking about meeting up on the 10th of June or July, and did we decide on an actual meeting up place? Either way i can try to make something work.

Meet and Greet for the OBDR is On Saturday JUNE 10th. This is pretty much a logistics meeting and a get to know each other a bit. I will stay overnight there and meet up with [MENTION=66389]BlackWorksInc[/MENTION] on Sunday or after work on Saturday. [MENTION=66389]BlackWorksInc[/MENTION] any way you can meet everyone on the 10th even for a short 15-30 minutes?

We will depart for the OBDR on Wednesday JULY 5th from whichever route we decide from South to North.

I also cannot leave here until late night July 4th. We have a work detail mandating everyone be present due to an influx of people to the city for festivities. I could leave directly from work at about midnight, and head to whatever starting point you were planning, get a few hours sleep, and be ready to roll in the morning.

I just requested Friday off so I would basically have available Wednesday, Thursday, Friday (assuming they give me Friday off, otherwise just Wed and Thurs). I would have to head back late Friday PM to be home by Saturday afternoon.

Obviously for me doing it south to north is the best.

I have 2m, CB, and am perfectly content smashing over boulders and pinstriping my truck or rolling along at a sedate speed on a gravel road. Park me in the back and I'll just stay 100 yards back in your mirror for 3 days!

This is great. So you have three days to do a portion of the route. South to North is definitely best for you coming from California. This works fine for us as well. As a team I vote now that we all see you off to at least a paved road near a town.

I won't be able to make the 10th due to a new job and moving to BC. I will be closer for future meetups though!

No problem. We'll be on 2m so we can always let you know where we are so you can join us. Since you've done many of the sections before, what are your thoughts about starting at Route 6 from Coos Bay over to Crescent Lake (Intersection of routes 2,3,6) and heading north on Route 3 (scenic highway bypass is available if necessary) to pick up Route 4 from Sisters over to Seneca and then finish up Route 5 at Walla Walla? The consensus I'm getting from reading the various trip reports (mostly by the dual sport riders) is the high desert (Christmas Valley) and the "rock garden" (not difficult, just not enjoyable) are two sections most folks would avoid if they had to do it again. We would avoid both of these sections. I've read that the coast from Coos Bay to the Cascades is gorgeous and so is Route 4 from Sisters through Prineville to Seneca.

If it's doable, Coos Bay isn't a bad departure destination for everyone.

Coos Bay would be a perfect meeting point for me. It's about 4 hours right up the 101, I could leave here July 4th late night and get outside of the Cooze around 0400, sleep until 0800-ish, meet for breakfast....

I have a friend who lives in Sisters so depending on timing I may try to say hi to her over lunch or something and rejoin the group later on the Sisters day.

Route 6 that is about a day and change, Route 3 going South to North you won't be able to do a couple of pieces of it I feel adequately in the timeframe. Route 4 is neat and enjoyable along with the two section of Route 5. I did Route 3 + 4 + those sections of 5 in a 7 day stretch. Averaging 100 miles a day or so did it all in a week time. There is three area's minimum that had 5+ feet of snow two weekends again when Exploring, also one of the connectors was down for the Logging Season. They were supposed to leave a road through but it wasn't up at the time I spent an entire day exploring 4 mile area till I gave up.

I honestly think its doable but I'm concerned with two area's that killed travel time down to like 20-30 miles max in 12 hours...

If you guys are dead set on Saturday the 10th, it's gonna have to be after 17:00 for me as that's when I'm done working that Saturday (seriously, the day after I agree to cover my coworker this Saturday you guys decide the 10th! LOL)

Yep. If Route 3 between Crescent & Sisters is iffy then we can just run up highway 97 or the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway (FR 850) to Sisters.

Just trying to do a head count and pre-inventory. If all goes as planned I need to know how many plan on doing the OBDR.

• ISC Rigging Pulley and one Warn Snatch Block

• (Could possibly use a winch extension)

Refrigeration and Cooking

• ARB 63L Fridge (I'll have room)
• Skottle
• MSR Burner
• (I also have a two burner stove but I'm not planning on bringing it unless...)

Just in Case

• ARB Single Cylinder compressor mounted
• ARB tire repair kit
• ARB EZ Inflator and deflator
• Tools
• One Gallon of Toyota Red AntiFreeze
• One qt of 5W-30 Mobil 1 Synthetic
• A few Cans of Octane Boost since I might not be able to get premium.

So you can buy Premium in a few locations i know for sure.
[MENTION=166847]K7CWJ[/MENTION] - All area's are by passable, some are a little long but where your wanting to tie into is good. There is a section that is further south that goes between Rogue River (SW of Crater Lake) and wiggles for 63 miles (kick ass drive, beautiful and I enjoy it every time), but there is no 'bypass' and the road around is like 120 roughly, haha. But anyways totally off subject =\

I'll keep an eye on this if I have service and upload pictures of our Alvord Desert status and what not. I will have to figure out where to tie into it, I'm thinking Route 6 and jump out around Route 3 going North but it depends on how things go over the next 12 days. May jump into a different section.

I am solo.

Comms - 2M mobile and CB. Also have 2M portable for truck-to spotter comms.

Recovery / tools - tow strap and 2 D rings, shovel, axe, small saw, small metric tool kit, 4 - 2.5 gal gas cans, 12 ga shotgun

First aid - two small FA packs (also have 20 years as an EMT-Advanced), fire ext

Cooking / food - Grizzly cooler, Coleman 2 burner, pots and such

I camp out of the back of the truck so I am self contained and don't need tent space, etc.

Not sure right now. Me and [MENTION=166847]K7CWJ[/MENTION] were talking about that today. Seems all you Bend/Salem folks can't make it due to work and other commitments. We're thinking of slipping it to next weekend. I've been holding off until we get a head count tomorrow.
