Oregon Backcountry Discovery Route 2017 Planning

Just saw this post, we (myself and 2 other rigs) will be doing this July 9-21/23 from SoCal, OBDR, and then the WBDR and would possibly like to link up depending on times/locations!

You say from SOCAl so either route 3 up to 2/4 and over or all of route 5??

We're leaving early on the 5th from the coast (rt 6) over to 3, up to 4 and finishing up with sections 3 and 4 of route 5. Looking at about 125 mi per day for 8 days.

 • Route 6 (234) (day and half)
 • Route 3 (~ 189mi for upper half) (Almost two days)
 • Route 4 (240mi) (two days)
 • Route 5-3 (162mi) (day and half) (You'll be departing when we jump on this route)
 • Route 5-4 (211mi) (two days)

My guess is, since we're going to be four days ahead of you I'm not sure if we'll be able to meet up at all. We'll be on our 5th day when you depart. We should be on section 5-3 on the 9th.

Our plan is to keep a good pace but enjoy the entire trip. We're not "destination" or "point-to-point" bound.

K7CWJ has the entire route built and might be able to provide you with a few more details. Route 5 is shorter than the route we're taking so there might be a chance.

EDIT: By the way that's quite the trip you guys have planned. If you need any insight to the WABDR, don't hesitate to contact me. I did it last year and it was AWESOME! Actually managed to do the entire route without being diverted because of fires. You'll need to purchase two passes: Annual Northwest Forest Pass (good for Or and Wa) and the Discover Pass for Washington only.

Ahh very true. Yeah the plan is to do route 5 to the WBDR. So you guys would be ahead of us by too much. Awesome I'll hit him and and see. Let us know if anything must sees or what not. We are planning for loads of extra time to fully enjoy it all. Thanks

Did I make it in time for a decal haha?

So are we pretty much in charge of our own food for the trip or are we going to have some group meals? I have plenty of options for cooking both and am willing to contribute whatever I can.

Great question. So K7CWJ were thinking that dinners should be shared (one person responsible for one or two nights and so forth) but we should be on our own for b-fast and lunch. My wife is planning some big meals for all of us. Keep in mind one of the benefits of the ARB Fridge is; no ice so I can keep vegetables and meat in ziploc bags ready to go. I can also keep them frozen longer.

Working on an excel spreadsheet to email everyone sometime this weekend. List of emergency contacts, alergies etc....

Absolutely! For comms I think we're all going to be using 2m. Will let you know what frequency we move to.

It will be GREAT having Rcastle along! That Coos Co. is confusing.

Just read through Kotrin's build, DAMN, nice Runner and just keep keeping on!, that's all any of us can do. You my man.../deep bow.

I can scout out any of the Central Oregon sections...clear any wind fall. Lots of big winds this year.
I have the OBDR maps now. Fast shipping!
Or we can just take it as it is. Expedient or adventure?

Cooking...I know this girl that lives up at Mt. Hood. SUPER, cook. Maybe able to get her to whip up something after we get north of Bend...no promises.
I am a meat and potatoes kind, nothing to fancy. Not much of a cook myself...wouldn't want to make the group suffer.

Haha I dont know by the way you posted if you think I am going to be able to navigate you through the Coos Co. Section. If that is what you are thinking, we had to skip that section and I wont be able to meet up with you guys until the next day sometime.

LOL, I thought you said you did this last year? The other way? If not, no worries we will figure it out.

We had to skip that part due to 104 degree weather and getting the jeep stuck in a ditch. It ate up about 3 hours and we ran out of days.

Right on with the deep bow to Kotrin! I think he's still off the grid right now. Sure hope he can make some of this trip. Im good with whatever food you bring! Meat and taters are good!

My maps came in fast! Just a cpl days. They would be difficult to copy and pass on to everyone. Hopefully the Forest department has cleared most of the dead fall by time we get started. I'm bringing a chain saw. I think thats two with the group.
K7CWJ is bringing a choker plus we'll have several axes I'm sure.

I'd love to but between having family over for 4th of July and work afterwards I'm not going to be able to make it this time. Sorry guys.

I'm not exactly a good camp cook. ...if we take turns cooking you guys might be eating refrigerated Subway sandwiches one night....

I'm totally indifferent with group meals, fellas. If you're interested in doing one just chime in and we'll add it to Rock_Rat's trip planning spreadsheet. If you'd rather not group cook, that's certainly fine too :-)

*Segway to trip planning*

Tomorrow I'll be sharing a link to my Gaia GPS folder for OBDR 2017. There you will find the planned route with a bunch of waypoints for fuel, campsites/campgrounds, stream crossings, known re-routes, and other POI's.

If you want to use all of the files in the folder you'll need to download the GAIA GPS app. Also, if you would like a copy of the GPX files, just PM me with your email address. The tracks I have did not come from OOHVA but I think they are nearly identical. Rock_rat has the OOHVA files if you want to ask him for those.

Hope you all had a great Fathers Day weekend! Cheers.

Well back, I don't know if I can make it took off the swing away and already fixed my transmission cross member. My actual spindle got pulled so hard it physically TWEAKED my plate bumper. I even had pieces under neath welded, it won't be fixed till winter and hopefully I get some extra money before then.

Here is the other thing that can change a lot as I found out during my trip. My son has his first adult teeth coming in, its pushed up behind his baby teeth in the front. The front teeth aren't lose so he goes in on Monday (the 26th) to see a specialist and see if it needs emergency or not. Always is tough when the little guys have to deal with stuff that is difficult for adults. I'm just glad when your younger it heals quicker. I'll keep you posted but as of this moment I don't know.

I do know I can't do the entire trip, not after what it did to myself over the last bit. Nervous about Ouray but we shall see. I do know that I'm not doing the WABDR. Maybe next year for it....we shall see.

Hey guys go ahead and check your own personal emails. I sent you the link to the trip planning page along with and Excel file with even more details! Only four of you are confirmed for the trip so I only sent to those who are confirmed
:-)

I'll take a foot long, sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki on Italian herb and cheese (or is it Parmesan and oregano?) and Pepper Jack, toasted please. Lettuce, tomato, jalapeno's, sweet onion sauce with salt and pepper. Haha!!! Done this a few times. And of course the reply is, "did you want cheese? I forgot, did you say you wanted it toasted?"

So I don't see a "Don't like your post link"

I think that counts for dislike. Have you decided on what says where? I can do some rough math, but its going to be hard to figure out which day you would be where but i'll keep an eye on it and will keep you posted when we get back on Monday from the Specialist.

I've been out dealing with two sick kids. Besides the doctor's office and pharmacy, I won't be going anywhere for a while.
