4 Runners are fun vehicles, they can take you to work or up some mountain side where you come to a locked gate and no trespassing signs ( the road I need is just over there). Hour of back tracking on a slow 2 track. Its all part of the fun.

Looking forward- had looked for this road on previous trips on bikes. It completely disappears in several areas.

Made it thru the gap, and quite a few miles before this- the whole valley sloped towards this boggy area and there were larger waters holes past this one. The desert can be insanely slippery with a little water. I had already run several water holes and its the sticky mud that instantly covers your wheels, yet is slippery, you can get stuck in 2" mud with a slight incline. Turned around and headed back after checking ahead, cant do it with out a 2nd rig for a pull if needed. Oh well the way in was fun.

The trail is still sandy wash, with some rain ruts, think 2-4 feet deep yet only a foot or two wide in some spots. Desert had some good rains in early to mid May. You can see the Big Sandy Gap in the distance.

I have slept in here a few times, including one time when I shouldnt have, as pack rats had over taken the kitchen. It was well past midnight and we had been riding for many hours in the dark. Too tired to care. Pack rats still laying waste to this place, few beers left behind. Clean water spring at this site, probably only reason this place is here, as its middle no where.

Hot river Main Pools- great place to soak, except the swimmers itch bugs that got me in a few places. Been here many times, never a single bite until last year and that time i got it bad. Camped at the upper pools and some methy lady in a minivan rolled up and told me i was in her spot. Pointed towards the main pools and told her- hey I am camping here and besides there no one else here and the main pools are wide open. She rambled off towing her camper trailer towards the main pools.

Awesome 5 days in SE Oregon.

Where are these trails? I'm in Salem and the local forest trails are beautiful, green and water everywhere but it's not the best off road trips. it's all graveled forest roads for 2WD. I like the looks of the terrain in your photos.

Your trip may be good to post in the Pacific NW area too, more Oregon and Washington people there.

Yeah, it's a bit empty most days, I've tried to set up some stuff before (I'm in Bend) and it usually falls apart because it's a pain to drive over the mountains (many members seem to be in the Salem/Portland area).

There's a couple modified 4Runners I see in Bend that look more than the usual spacer/tires we sell at the dealership. I left a couple notes for them to join the forum but I never heard back. For how friendly Bend is, 4Runner guys here don't seem as quick to chat as Jeepers I guess? lol Maybe I'm just too weird.

Was living at Mt.Hood for last 17 years, but just sold house and am taking a year off to travel a bit. So PDX based for now, but am roaming a bit. 12 of the last 30 days have been out and about East of Bend. Also spent 4 days around Sumpter OR. Old mining towns with tons of roads, 2 tracks and legit 4x4 tracks. It still nice and green up there.

Yeah there are a lot of lifted 4 runners around, some give the wave some don't. Also never knew there was regional section either?
