Outer tie rod end lock nut

What size wrench do I need to get the lock nut off? It is bigger than 22mm. I have just that standing in the way of finishing the replacement of the LBJ, steering bushings, sway bar links and OTRE.

Any other tricks? I know to measure the current distance to keep toe close but anything else?

When I lost the right socket for it, I was able to easily break it loose with a big old adjustable wrench.

If there is a bunch of rust be careful, don't strip the damn thing! But being that it is such a large fastener (used in lieu of nut), there is a lot of surface area. So not too much chance of that wrench slipping off and rounding it

Did mine not too long ago and as the above said, I used an adjustable wrench and just hammered it. I also used a torch and lots of PB-Blaster. They can be a real bugger!

I just did this as well and the answer is a 27mm and a 28mm wrench. These are not common types, so a pipe wrench is a good option. You'll need at least 2. One for the ITRE and one on the lock nut. If you have another guy you can use a smaller wrench and just put it right over the OTRE itself and push/pull from one more angle.

And also - I ended up having to soak it in Deisel fuel to get it to loosen enough. This worked AWESOME.

Thanks. I'll run over to my parents to grab a pipe wrench. Good to know on the size. At 218k, these were all needed. One of the sway bar links had snapped off at some point.

When you separated the OTE from the LBJ, and if they drooped down quickly, you may want to invest in some ITRs as well if you can can by the parts store tomorrow before putting it all back together.

I ran into this today - I second the pipe wrench and pb blaster. Instead of countering the force on the 28mm right next to the lock but, I was able to put an adjustable wrench on the square part of the otre. I attached a pipe on the end of that wrench so it would reach the ground - that way I was able to crank on the lock nut with both hands and use the ground as the counter force.

I strongly agree with this. It will be much easier to do it now while you got everything exposed. If I recall the ITRE aren't that expensive.
