Overfilled Diff Issue?

I'm hoping I am overthinking this, but today I changed my rear differential fluid and thought my 5th-gen TRD OR was level in my driveway. Earlier in the week I tested to make sure I can get my 4R level and it was spot on. Today though after removing some items from the trunk and spare tire, I realized after the fact that it actually wasn't perfectly level….close, but not quite. The bubble on my level was about 95% centered, just outside the line on one side

When refilling the rear diff, I was able to put in 3 quarts and no fluid trickled out of the fill port. Shining a flashlight into the port, the fluid looked almost brimmed.

My rear diff capacity is 2.9 quarts, so I’m assuming being over by 0.1 quart isn’t something I should stress over… right?

You'll be fine. If you're that concerned, you can get a one of these suction devices. Just stick the hose in the fill plug and draw some out.

Alternatively, you can park on a perfectly flat ground, open your fill plug and see if any comes out.

During my first (rear) diff oil-change, I was surprised to find the factory-fill was noticeably below the overflow. It seemed, to my eye, underfilled.

And when I filled it with new oil, it took a bit more than I expected. I used ramps for the rear-wheels and a trolley jack at the front to get the vehicle roughly level. But not accurately-level like I try to do with transmission fluid.

In your diff, you want the (rear/lower) pinion-bearing to sit in some oil. Gear rotation slings oil everywhere else. It's not a precise science. At this approximate level, the contact area of the pinon and ring gears will be completely submerged, and that's what you really (REALLY) need. One minor risk to overfilling is that the axle-seals could seep a bit if the level is too high ... although I've not seen this, and I ran the rear axle in my FJ45 Land Cruiser for 30yrs with the full-floater axle-tubes pretty much full of oil. If it were going to seep past seals, it would have, but it never did.

Summary: don't even worry about 0.1 quart, one way or the other. Run good oil (I prefer 75W140 full-synthetic), and change it per your usage (towing/high-speed/high-load = more often; gentle city-only driving less often). I wind up changing rear-diff every couple of years.
