Overheat question

So I am finally having an overheat problem. She runs fine at idle. I can rec the engine at about 3000 rpm for at least 5 minutes and she stays right where she is supposed to. The problem is when I start driving. She overheats within a few miles. Thoughts?

Air in the lines?
Water pump?
Head gasket?

Radiator fan(s)?

I've ordered a new clutch for my radiator fan - it's almost shot. Would have been really bad if I hadn't caught it in time.

If you have the electric fan - make sure it's working properly.

Start with the easy things before working your way up the list. Could also be the temperature sensor (but I doubt it).
 
Standard fan. Just drive it to work. Made it about 7 miles before she heated up. I think air is getting in the system somehow (cracked head, head gasket). Praying it is something simpler, but not hopeful. I guess I bought the new DD just in time. Suggestions on things to check still welcome.
 
Had a similar problem. Turns out it was a clogged rad. The bottom tank was all mucked up. Had it rodded out. What about ur T-stat? Is it functioning properly? fwiw
 
I had my radiator gone though a couple months back. Rodded out and whatnot. Only cost around $50.

Sounds like rad. I'd install a fresh t-stat and coolant since your "in there". I noticed Toyota improved the rad on ours. The core is bigger and more dense then the original.

A compression test would tell you if its the HG or not? Did you try bleeding the system?

Bummer. Dont let that baby over heat or youll be doing the HG anyway!

She hasn't officially overheated yet. I shut it off if it gets anywhere near the red.

I'm starting to lean towards the water pump. I don't appear to get any circulation of the coolant and it looks like there may be a leak by the water pump. Do I have the MR2 up and running and the Minnow will move in to the garage for inspection.
 
I've got her torn apart, and the water pump pulley spins completely free. So it is not the water pump. Gonna swap out the thermostat. I flushed the radiator and it is flowing freely as well.

I wasn't getting any flow of coolant, so could it be as simple as a thermostat?

If youre in that deep, I would recommend changing the water pump anyway. I think there around the $30 mark, and might also be a good time to do the timing belt if its time...

Just solved this problem. Sounds just like what I just fixed. I got a no spill funnel thing for like 5 bucks on ebay. Then, you attach it to your radiator cap and let it fill up with coolant/water mix up to about halfway up the funnel. Then, let the motor run for a while, keeping an eye on the coolant. If there really is air in there, (which was the case for me) you will see little bubbles coming up from the top. Keep petting it run until the bubbles stop, and you will have successfully burped the system of any bubbles.
Another last resort before spending money would be to bleed out the system by the bleed valve under the rad. Then refill it and make sure the entire system has been ran through.
One of the most common sources of all the air entering though, is a bad rad cap. Check the rating on it. Most of the first-second gens had a rating of about 13 i think. Also, just make sure its holding alright.That could be your problem.

Well I pulled it all apart, flushed the radiator and replaced the thermostat. The water pump was fine. Put it all back together and burped the system a few times. It drove fine for a 13 mile test drive and 9 miles to work today. If air is getting in, I'll know in the next day or so.

Hope it all works out for you this time. Wish I was so lucky.

Went today to change out the radiator fan clutch, and after removing the fan I found my problem. Two of the retainers were the fan bolts to the clutch were broken off. No wonder my fan wobbled. Found a replacement fan at Toyota Wholesale Parts - Authentic OEM Toyota Parts direct from Village Toyota Parts | Village Toyota Parts - now I have to wait for it to arrive...<sigh>

While I had the radiator out I went ahead and bought a new radiator, upper and lower radiator hoses. The old radiator didn't leak - yet, but looks like something had got between the fan and the radiator, and beat the crap out of it. Better safe then stranded!

More bad and good news.

Got an email from TireRack. The wheels that I had ordered were going to take another 60+ days to even ship from the supplier. So I changed my order to these instead --

Now the good news - just received the email that the wheels and the BFG M/T KM2 (33x12.5 15") have just been shipped! Should be here next week.
