I was driving to Vegas from California in my truck, the way their was ok except for it being slower than any car on the road up the hills. The way back was ok but someone told me to take the od off and push the ect button the the up hills so I did and I had 3 big hills to go up I was fine up unroll getting to the 3rd one started overheating pulled over saw it coming out the overflow tank boiling, smelled like trans fluid saw it dripping underneath around trans area. After it cooled down checked the fluid in trans still was ok toped off the radiator and car drove fine all the way home. Cat has used engine but always drove fine except for check engine light came on when I ran it hard up hills or wanted to go somewhat fast, had new everything radiator, t stay, fans work fine hoses not leaking

3.0 is known for head gaskets i got my money on that being your problem.

they act funny, the first step i would take is to replace the thermostat with a Toyota factory one aftermarket stats dont always work correctly and cause lots of issues.
if you were working the engine hard and it overheated that means your flow is restricted or your t stat is 190 degree which means it opens at 190 that puts your running temp very close to the overheat area the factory stat is 180 the OD sensor works at 178 degrees so at running temp the od sensor works and the engine works hard its still farther away from over heating.
the head gasket can bee a issue for overheating if it gets hot enough it can expand and soak heat from the combustion chamber but you will continue to have issues all the time so keep an eye on it and try a correct stat first. its cheap and easy

Well my gauge ran at bout half all the time up until I had to hit the hills so t stat I thought was ok but ill see about changing it
Water pump is new t stat is new radiator is new running all makes all models prestone half and half been driving it for about a month now everything has been fine till I went on this long trip. The check engine light comes on when I force the engine at higher speeds but goes off by the time I slow down so I don't know what's up with that either

are there any leaks in your radiator? look around the neck of the radiator for coolant. did you replace a hose recently?
