overheated just shut off and making clanking noise...

hi all, first i'd like to say that i am new to toyota and specifically 4runners. i bought a 1995 4runner SR5 4x4 and i knew it had an over heating issue. like a dumb ass i took it out so i can register it and pick up somethings at the grocery store. the entire trip the guage red fine, then half way home it shot up and i started hearing a metalic clanking noise coming from under the truck. the truck just shut off on me as i pulled over. i finally was towed home by my brother and started to fill the radiator when i noticed water gushing from just above the oil pan (idk where the water pump location is). as for the clanking noise, when it was overheated the noise rose up when i hit the gas and when i let go, nothing. i let it sit and just started it back up and still making a faint noise, not as bad as before though. any thoughts? i know i'm going to have to replace radiator and probably the water pump, but idk about that clanking noise.... didn't make that noise before. Thank you for any input.

On the back of the block (pass side) against the firewall is a "coolant bypass valve". I had a leak from there a few months back, its a ***** getting into it, but it can be done. That maybe where one of the coolant leaks is coming from, then dripping down. These engines are extremely reliable except for the headgasket (I assume you have a v6). The exhaust manifold cooks the gasket and causes it to fail prematurely. I'm not sure about the clanking noise, possibly timing belt tear? You'll have to get in there and tear her apart. The experts will chime in I'm sure.
 
Is the gushing water coming from the front or back of the motor? Front being closest to the radiator.

Any Idea why it has overheating issues?

The clanking sound could be a really bad thing. You could of spun a bearing when it overheated or messed up a valve but im just speculating. Remember the temp gauge will only read true if coolant/water is running over it.
 
The water is coming from the front of the engine. I heard about the head gasket issues as well as the radiator issues. I'm not new to mechanical aspects of cars, Toyota's are new to me tho. The leak seems to be coming from above the oil pan. I hope I didn't spin a bearing or bent a valve... can anything be done to help conserve the head gasket from damage at all?
 
And yes, its the 3.0 V6. I heard these engines are dogs. Tho the guy who sold it to me said the engine was rebuilt about 40k miles ago or so.

Water from front could be rad hoses, waterpump, radiator all sorts of things. Fill it up and see where exactly its coming from.
 
What hoe_nah said, especially the radiator, if it looks like the original rad or old as hell and beat up, get a new one, I think AZ carries them for 140 or so.
 
thanks all, i was going to buy a new radiator anyways. i already seem to know the general area where the leak is coming from. someone who knows the engines, is the crank pully directly over the oil pan, and is the water pump somewhere above that?
 
I am going through this same scenario right now. I did the headgaskets but now have a "knock" from the cam bearings.
You may as well start planning on another engine or a rebuild at this point in my opinion.
 
I have a like new radiator from a 95 that I bought to part out. 50.00 plus shipping.I know this is not the classified section. but I dont need it. Im gonna guess 25-30 bucks for shipping
 
also did it just make the noise when it was hot or does it still do now? its common for a motor to make all kinds of noises when its overheating. if it still does it you may have blown a head gasket, water in the cylinders will make noise like that. check the oil for water and the water for oil and a compression test.

Yes the crank pulley is above the oil pan and the water pump is above the pulley. But the coolant inlet hose, the coolant return hose, a coolant bypass and the head gasket are all above the oil pan. The leak could be coming from anywhere and working it's way down the cavities of the engine block to puddle on the oil pan lip.

Your gonna have to tear into it a little to narrow down what is going on. Your going to get a lot of "it could be this" and worse case scenarios until you figure out what it actually is. For instance, your scenario sounds a little like mine when my timing belt exploded. The overheating was not as prolonged as yours, only about 1 minute for me to get it off the highway, but after the overheating and a noticeable "pop" it would crank but not start. Took it back, tore into and notice the lower timing cover was cracked from the the belt letting loose. Once apart I found that the water pump pulley had seized and the belt heated up until it let loose.

Well, replaced radiator, water pump and hoses. Took it out to getgas and some other stuff and ran fine, nice and cold. But on my way to work it started over heating again... I don't get it... I don't notice any coolant leaking... the funny this is when I hit the gas the engine temp cooled off a bit. Could this be because the water pump is attached to a Lilly? Idk anymore ...

You probably have air in the system. Check your coolant level, top off if needed.

BTW did you change the thermostat when you put everything back together?
 
I can't even drive 5 miles without overheating... I don't think its a blown head gasket... there's a new leak towards the upper rear portion of the engine right above the transfer case, might be a freeze plug or bad coolant tubes. I hope its just coolant tubes... I'm goin to fill her up with some distilled water tomorrow and turn her on and see if I can locate the leakage.
