overheated just shut off and making clanking noise...

no, no air in the system, def have a leak... i got a better view today, filled her up with distilled water, and let her run. saw the leak was on the back side of the engine right above the front transmission. leak only really happens when the truck is on, and when i turn her off the leaking stops... i realy hope its not a freeze plug, i can't get to it to fix it unless anyone has done a freeze plug in the back of the engine and can share tips? lol

ok, i think i'm getting closer, i'm looking at pics of the engine and where the leak seems to be coming from, but there seems to be an exhaust manifold in the way i think? it cuts across the back of the engine and attaches at either side of the headers or something. anyone have a pic of the engine without that part on?? can't seem to find one online, i just want to verify if there is anything else back there that can leak or have coolant running through it.. also, i think i've narrowed it down to the water bypass outlet and the tubes attached to it... thank you in advance!

There is a U shaped pipe at the back of the drivers side head. Follow that. I think that feeds the heater core and both heads.

yup, exactly, i found out thats where the leak is coming from, and its bad... noticed a rust line on the pipe, felt it wet and also saw some water driping from it. i didn't see anywhere else where it was leaking.

That's a dealer part. Mines had a leak from there as well, but it was from rubbing against the engine lift hook. You could try fix it but you are better off replacing it.

oh ok, i thought i could buy it at an auto parts store?? its a metal u shaped pipe right?? it goes under the manifold?? i'm going to replace it, i'm not going to repair anything.

The one under ther exhaust manifold is the oil cooler. The one at rear of the drivers side head cylinder is the U shaped pipe I was talking about. It's almost against the firewall.

found the leak!! it was the rubber tube that attaches the the metal pipe that runs under the manifold... just waiting to get the part tonight and tomorrow i should hopefully get it done...

update: cut out a few more hoses that looked suspect, maily heater hoses. plenum is still out of the truck. parts are hard to find, can't find any part numbers, but going to def get the haines manual.

My 4Runner is doing the same thing now. A mechanic is telling me I have to get a new engine.
