I have an 86 4runner with a fairly new engine and radiator. The coolant overflow chamber is being filled from the engine when I drive, at least some of the time. This seems to happen more at low speeds. I replaced both the water pump and the thermostat and it now only seems to happen when I am driving in town or slowly upill. Could it be the fan? Anyway I can find out if it is? The fan certainly seems to turn OK. Could it be that the air conditioning radiator (which is pretty blocked and old and not in use) is blocking the flow of air to the engine radiator? Could it be a head gasket (there is no sign on water in oil or oil in water)? How do I diagnose any of those? Thanks!!

I would guess the fan clutch it bad, if it's overheating at low speeds; that's when the fan should be kicking in. At higher speeds natural air flow will cool better than the fan.
