overheating?!?!?

i just got a 89 4runner i had for a couple months now everything seems fine till about two/three days ago started runnin crappy. i dont knoe exactly whats wrong but the temp gauge stays at 0 for a long time and then when it starts to move it go almost all the way to red. like last night i drove home from work which is alittle past a mile away and it went all the way in to the red.

i say its over heating because of that but could it be something else? if its overheating what can i do to fix it?

help please!

can you elaborate on "runnin crappy"? maybe a Head gasket issue?

its starting to run shaky and its starting to have a ticking sound, also like when im switching gears it sounds and feels like the engine stops for a second then goes again im not sure exactly how to explain it

do you have the 22R-E or the 3.0 motor. Auto or manual?

What motor you have? Could be head gasket's, you check your oil? Is it milky? How about smelling your coolant? Smell like exhaust? It could also be the thermostat sticking. I would start be replacing that sense it's the cheapest part.

oil is fine, im not sure what you mean by milky though?
and coolent is fine no real smells from anything on the car

What color is the oil? Does it seem like normal oil or mixed with water?

its normal its not very old either but from what i looked at doesnt look mixed

I would replace the thermostat 1st and see what happen's.
