Overpriced?

Hello, this is my first post. And I'm looking for a later-model 3rd gen to replace my current car, a 2-door Civic which I feel doesn't have the space and utility for me.

I've been browsing Craigslist & Kijiji in my area and I found this:

2001 Toyota 4Runner Limited SUV - Burnaby/New Westminster Cars For Sale - Kijiji Burnaby/New Westminster Canada.

2001 4Runner Limited, 170,000KM (105K Miles). Super clean, fully loaded, doesn't look to have any major issues.

The only problem is that it is $9,900.. which is a lot more than I intend to spend (about $5,000-7,000). Is it a "good" deal? Worth it?

I am asking because I'm really fearful about buying a high-mileage T4R just to have something explode on me. Which is why I haven't dropped the cash on a higher-mileage model yet. And I would be stuck in a position to spend thousands of dollars just to get it back in running condition.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Ten grand is a little too much. With that mileage lots of maintenance is required and looking for malfunction happening in the future. I personally wouldn't pay more than six grand.

If the owner has lots of documented maintenance and the undercarriage is relatively rust free (the GVRD salts the roads like crazy, as I'm sure you know) I might offer 8000 and walk. It looks like a nice truck though. Good luck!

Question. Does the mileage make a huge difference? I've done Searches on this forum, and from what I am gathering these cars are pretty bulletproof. This is the lowest-mileage T4R Limited I can find right now, and I am considering taking a look at another T4R Limited that is $2,000 cheaper BUT has 240,000KMs. I'm just on the fence about buying a truck with such high kms on it…

Don't worry about the mileage so much. Worry about how well it has been well taken care of and that the price is right.

A well maintained high mileage vehicle is better then a poorly maintained low mileage vehicle.

I agree with 5vzt4r. I would rather have a well maitained high mileage 4runner than a low mileage 4runner that was neglected. Ive got 300 000 km now and the engine is running strong.

If the records are there then there is nothing to worry about. Now the rust issue I'm sure is always going to be an issue with anything in that part of the world. So, I think that 7,500 might be a better offer and that is on the high end for me. It is clean but it is an 01, so no E-Locker. Just my .02 cents on the matter. Good luck on your search.

You can take a road trip to CA and find a nice rust free one for 5-6k and road trip it home also....

Yeah, like I said, make sure the maintenance is done and documented. Under 200k seems like decent mileage to me, really. My truck just rolled 250k and runs great. I bought it at 200k, but it was owned by a dealer tech so has documentation. I paid 7000 for it, but it needed tires and an exhaust (Still needs most of an exhaust... *sigh) and its a 96, so considerably older than the one you're looking at.

But yeah, check the truck out and use your judgement like I'm sure you will. Look underneath, check the corners of the front and rear bumpers on the inside for rust.. The usual.

I bought mine with 250,000km for 9k in 07'. It has 395,000km on it now. Untouched engine/trans. Super reliable truck now that its got a new rad. All the "little" issues have been easily fixable.


When i buy a truck i look for ones that have no mods, no wiring hacks, and as little rust as possible underneath.

That's way overpriced! I know some prices are area specific but if its that bad there you may want to travel out of state fly in and drive it home. I paid 6400 last year for my 1997 limited with 127k in excellent cond. what sucked though was by the time I added in the leaking water pump replacement with timing belt, valve adjust, full service, tires, brakes, rotors, clock I was into it another 2500. So in into it about 9k but with 127k and just as clean as most 5th gens I'm parking next to I feel great about the 30k I saves not buying new. There's no dought these things will go 400k but I wouldn't buy this one you have your eye on unless every single service has been done cause it adds up quick!!

Thanks for the advice, guys.. and yes I am well aware that unfortunately, my area tends to have ridiculously high prices for 4Runners. I'll keep searching, there's no real rush for me. Might even grab one from down South, but I know i'll basically end up spending the cost savings on getting it "certified" for ICBC (another BC-only cash grab) not to mention customs duties/taxes so I might as well go local. Hopefully a sweet deal springs up during the wintertime.

+1 on getting a good priced clean runner in CA. And there's no way BC has more restrictions than California, is there??

If that's the case, I agree, go local. Be patient and it'll show up.

I don't think they're that far off on the price. It's worth going to look at it. If its rust free (body & chassis) and had the TB/WP done, see if you can get it for around $8,000. If they're not done, point that out to the seller and try to get it for around $7,000.
