Oversized Oil Filter

Let's be real here folks. If an oil change is breaking your budget you need to rethink some things. 99.9% of folks are never going to realize the minor cost savings to go with extended oil change intervals and high dollar synthetics (which btw Amsoil's site is showing the AMSOIL Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil at $11.10/qt which makes their oil change for 5qts come out to $55.50 and I've adjusted my prices above to reflect this). You'd be better off sending your oil to Blackstone for an analysis (I think it's like $20) and letting them tell you how long to run your interval out. Willing to bet 95% of us on this website change our oil to often. Also take in to consideration that oil filters will still need to be changed out at normal intervals and not 15k miles so factor that in to your cost equation as well.

If you are really so worried about saving money you should probably buy one less pizza a year, or one less case of beer a year, eat at McDonald's one week less a year, and actually enjoy the health benefits that come along with that.

Again, buy a quality oil and a quality filter and change at normal intervals (3-6k miles) and your engine will outlive the vehicle and your ownership of it.

Attached is an updated spreadsheet with the prices I listed earlier. 2 of the competitors are actually cheaper than the Amsoil even when you have to change them out twice.

Thank you for updating the sheet... and thats where I come in if you are interested in Amsoil. T4R membership has its benefits

however since I am interested in switching to synthetic I did read the whole article, including shear values, evap, etc etc and found all that information interesting

as far as cost

when I read the small print in the amsoil comparison it states that amsoil is good for 25k miles in light duty, not severe duty,
mobil 1 for 15k not severe duty and that mobil 1 does not reecomend 15k in severe duty
and no other intervals listed for other oils
so the test was done at the severe duty interval
which is half of the oci
it states that the avg interval in America is 4800 miles

One other glaring defect of the Amsoil study is that all measurements are performed on new oil. To me, the real interest is how well an oil performs after it has been lubricating my engine for five or seven thousand miles. In the case of TBN's, it is especially interesting what the number is at the END of the service interval not the beginning. This is why I rely on my Blackstone UOA's to guide my decision making.

People have posted results after 15K on the internet, a google search will produce the info you are looking for. In 5K I will be posting my results (will be ~6 mo and 6K miles). No argument here that oil analysis will be the best determination of your oils condition.
 
I'll chime in........Amsoil rocks, in my humble opinion. Use it in everything, v6 2-stroke outboard, 1997 4runner for about ten+ years, snow blower, tractor, all yard equipment. The use in the outboard was the deciding factor and any future engine of mine will have Amsoil. But that's just me.......

agree

more filter media regardless of the oil used is a plus
and regardless if a person is using a oil that will go 15k, the filter needs to be changed before that, in my opinion
if I was running a 15k oci I would still prob do a few filters and top it off b4 15k

this is turning into an "oil thread" but I have learned good info from it

Yes, that is the purpose. More media should be able to filter out more contaminates in the oil. A few side beneifts, may be negligible depending on the size of the filter, increased oil capacity, better/more efficient cooling. If it were me, and I have been wanting to install it for a while, I would look into remote bypass filtration. This is where I believe you would really see all the above benefits.

Hi Cashmoney,

Under my name in the vendor area (threads I have posted), I have a introduction that describes my history with Amsoil. For me, I have noticed that every vehicle I have used it in, the engine just runs smoother. When I bought my 4Runner, idle was around 750, I ran Amsoil engine flush and swapped to synthetic and now at idle my needle is on 500 RPM's. I can barely tell its running at a stop light, its not working as hard. V6's have been known for noisy lifters and VSV tick, I can hardly hear it on mine now after swapping when it was there at purchase. I live in AZ, summers are brutal, I feel Amsoil provides my 4Runner better protection from the intense heat... and cold when I go snowboarding. I do feel my oil looks cleaner with each drain, oil analysis later on will confirm or deny this. I like only having to change it once a year, its made in the USA and they truly will come through for the customer should they experience an unfortunate situation as result of using Amsoil. These are a few of the things that really stood out to me upon changing over, i've been up since 4am and just worked a 12hr shift, so I know I'm forgeting a few things or maybe not expressing them as well as I could right now. it relocates the oil filter to easy to get to place and some run it to an oil cooler on the way back to engine, you can also get a two filter set up so it goes through 2 filters.

What do these kits usually run? I've heard of issues before with relocation kits changing your oil capacity and having a need for a gage to monitor oil pressure. Any of that ring a bell for anyone else?

[MENTION=124615]3bears[/MENTION] is correct. I have provided a link to Amsoil's unit so you can get a better idea. There are a few different configurations. This one uses an adapter where your filter goes and sends oil over to the remote unit mounted elsewhere in the engine compartment. Majority of the oil is filtered through a regular filter, while a smaller volume it sent to another filter for finer filtration, sub 20 micron particles.
