Oversized Spare Tire Mounting Options

Looking for options other than the stock location. Would like to run a full size (oversized) spare. I'm considering just throwing it into the roof rack, but that will put me over 7' which means no garage unless I pull it down.

The hitch mounted spare is a possibility. Would like to know how this fits with towing a trailer which is not often but I could see how this could get annoying.

A rear bumper with swing out spare would be ideal but the cost is a hurdle. Would like more pictures and feedback on ones like CBI. Anyone running something else?

CBI makes a hitch mounted spare tire carrier that folds down for access to the trunk and also has a receiver on the back so you can't still tow without taking it off. Tiregate makes a swing away hitch mount carrier that i really like but some models are touching 1k, and for that cash id just buy a bumper.

I've been thinking about making a strap mount in the cargo area like some older SUVs did. At least until I get a rear bumper if I ever decide to get off my lazy ass and get a proper sized spare for my 4th gen's current set-up.

V6 or V8 ? If a 6 you might get a slightly aired down in there ? Have a 275 on my son's 05 . Just a thought

V6. I need to try pulling the stock size spare. I bet the whole mechanism is frozen with rust, but I can try putting one of the full size tires in there. I doubt the 285 will fit, and aired down is not typically how I like a spare. A small compressor can cure that though.

The Hitch-Gate looks interesting. Want to see more pictures to see how far off the back it puts the tire. A large gap will look a little hokie.

A 285/17, unless well worn or "small" for its size won't fit without rubbing the panhard if you don't do something about it. I have a new 285 BFG under there that I have stuffed aired down. I did a writeup about it a while back. Basicallt use a ratchet strap to keep it off the panhard bar. I did my first tire rotation last month and put it in service. No ill effects. While having to air up a spare is less than ideal, given the low likelihood of it, I'll take that hassle once in a blue moon.
